Get What's Coming
Rival Sons Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You lay on your back and the weak get weaker,
you could have been a doctor but at least you're not a preacher.
You had a good education until you fired your best teacher.
And when it comes back around you're gonna get what's coming.

When it comes back around you're gonna get what's coming
You lay on your back and the strong get stronger,
you say you've got the flu but we know it's just hunger.
You'd better file an extension because it's gonna take longer.
And when it comes back around you're gonna get what's coming.

When it comes back around you're gonna get what's coming.
You sit on your fence and you scream about justice.
Between the have and have-not's only one feels the difference.

And when it comes back around you're gonna get what's coming.
When it comes back around you're gonna get what's coming.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Rival Sons' song "Get What's Coming" are quite straightforward and unambiguous. The song is essentially a warning to those who do wrong or live dishonestly that they will eventually face the consequences of their actions. The song is confrontational and illustrates several examples of individuals who have made poor choices and those same choices will come back to haunt them. The first verse speaks of a person who had a seemingly bright future but instead chose a different path, only to later regret it. The second verse speaks of an individual who is dishonest about their condition and hides behind a cloak of deception only to eventually face the truth. Finally, the last verse speaks of an individual who sits on the fence and does nothing to help others or promote justice, but they will also face their karma.

The song encourages the listener to take responsibility for their actions and to live a life of integrity. It conveys the message of "what goes around comes around" and is a cautionary tale for those who choose to live without moral compass. It reminds us that, in the end, we all get what's coming to us, whether it be good or bad.

Theres a feeling every true rocker gets when they hear the first couple of notes from a newly discovered song. The stomach gets butterflies, the ears perk up, the heart swells and then by the end of the song....a change of pants

First band to twist my head 360 degrees since Zep. Fuck the critics. Someone finally provided the sound I've wanted to hear since 1980.  Carry On and Keep on Rival Sons.

I love this band, I like how they just do their thing and let everyone else try to pidgeon hole them. I really don't see them as (borrowing/stealing from) Led Zep, like some are saying. I think it's pretty obvious though that they are highly influenced by a lot of the 70's earlier rock sound. Nothing wrong at all with that. This is also why the Black Keys are drawing intrest. People are tired of the current Rock n Roll landscape. with everything sounding the fokking same Whats old is new again.
