When I Was A Youngster
Rizzle Kicks Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I can remember that when I was a little youth I,
Wanted to fly around the world making a new life,
I never thought today, I'd be where I am now,

Yo, wanted to be a fireman,
Than I lost the desire man,
The second I got old enough,
To buy myself a cider can,
Yeah, I was a smart little kid,
That side's departed me since,
These days you can catch me,
Sitting on the bench in the park with a lager and crisps

Back when I was younger,
I wanted to be everything on the planet,
Now that I am older,
It seems the ambition has vanished,
Yeah when I was a youngster,
When I was a, when I was a youngster,
Youngster, when I was a youngster
Yeah, and now that I'm older,
I wish I could've been everything that I wanted,
I'm on it

I think that if I think back back to the days
When I thought I didn't think that,
Nothing that I thought would not be possible,
Ha, try and figure that out,
Back when I didn't know how,
To settle for a desk job bring in those pounds,
I wanted to live in those clouds,
These days I deliver those sounds

I always thought of myself as a simple dreamer,
I never tried too hard but believed it,
Now all of a sudden, it's gone my way

Back when I was younger,
I wanted to be everything on the planet,
Now that I am older,
It seems the ambition has vanished,
Yeah when I was a youngster,
When I was a, when I was a youngster,
Youngster, when I was a youngster
Yeah, and now that I'm older,
I wish I could've been everything that I wanted,
I'm on it

I'm on it
I'm on it

Overall Meaning

The song "When I Was A Youngster" by Rizzle Kicks is a reflection on the fleeting nature of childhood dreams and the reality of growing up. In the first verse, the lyrics describe the aspirations of the singer as a child who dreamed of flying around the world and making a new life. But as an adult, they find themselves in a different place than they imagined, sitting on a bench in a park with a beer and chips.

The second verse continues this theme, with the singer acknowledging the transition from childhood to adulthood and the changing priorities that come with it. As a child, they wanted to be everything on the planet, but now that they're older, the ambition has vanished. The lyrics suggest that settling for a desk job to make money has replaced the desire to follow one's dreams.

Overall, the song is a bittersweet reflection on the passage of time and the inevitability of growing up. It suggests that while dreams may change and fade, there is always a chance to rediscover them and pursue them again.

Criminally Vulgar

I totally forgot they existed until today - this was possibly my favourite song when I was (coincidentally) a youngster!

Big Fat Mush, yeah. They really do deserve it. At the beginning I was like “awe they’re pretty talented. Cool, not many people know about them! This could be my thing!” But at this point, it just hurts to see how underrated they are. Literally every song of theirs is a banger. Not exaggerating.
edit: I actually didn’t know they stopped making songs so I’m pretty bummed :(
