He was born in Woodlake, California and raised in Ukiah. He taught himself guitar when he was 13 and considered his first influence to be Mike Bloomfield. At 18 he moved to San Francisco to form the Charles Ford Blues Band (named after his father, who was also a guitarist) featuring his brothers Mark (mouth harp) and Patrick (drums).
Robben was soon hired to play with Charles Musselwhite for nine months. Robben Ford played with Jimmy Witherspoon (1972-1973), the L.A. Express with Tom Scott (1974), George Harrison and Joni Mitchell. In 1977 he was a founding member of the Yellowjackets, which he stayed with until 1983, simultaneously having a solo career and working as a session guitarist.
In 1986, Ford toured with Miles Davis and he had two separate periods (1985 and 1987) with Sadao Watanabe, but he seemed to really find himself in 1992 when he returned to his roots: the blues. Ford formed a new group, the Blue Line, and subsequently recorded a couple of blues-rock dates for Stretch that are among the finest of his career. In 1999, he released Sunrise on Rhino and Supernatural on Blue Thumb. Ford signed to the Concord Jazz label in 2002 and released Blue Moon that same year, followed by Keep on Running in 2003 and Truth in 2007. Robben Ford whilst continuing to record solo albums has been touring in 2007 with guitar legend Larry Carlton.

So many things to torment me
And as I stumble down this road it takes a toll
These days and nights I turn to You
No human hand can pull me through
No cosmic force or magic brew will ever do
But I can see it coming
?Cause I can feel Your power
Surging through the whole of me
God is there and He is watching
He tells me all is well
God is there, there's no denying
He's supernatural, supernatural
Beyond this physical terrain
There's an invisible domain
Where angels battle over souls in vast array
But down on earth is where I am
No wings to fly, no place to stand
Here on my knees I am a stranger in this land
I need an intervention
A touch of providence
It goes beyond religion
To my very circumstance
God is there and He is watching
He tells me all is well
God is there, there's no denying
He's supernatural, supernatural
God is there and He is watching
The signs are everywhere
God is there, there's no denying
It?s supernatural, supernatural
In six days, the universe was made
(Supernatural)
And from the dead a man was raised
(Supernatural)
They say he walked across the waves
(Supernatural)
And I?ll believe it to my grave
But I can see You coming
You're not so far away
?Cause I can feel Your power
Surging through the whole of me
Yeah, yeah, yeah
God is supernatural
Yeah, yeah, yeah
God is there and He is watching
The signs are everywhere
God is there, there's no denying
It?s supernatural, supernatural
God is there, everywhere
God is there, God is there
Some things just can't be explained
The song "Supernatural" by Robben Ford is an exploration of the relationship between the singer and God in the face of the trials and tribulations of life. The singer of the song is struggling with the difficulties of living in a world that is full of torment and suffering. Despite this, the singer turns to God as a source of comfort and guidance. They acknowledge that no human hands or cosmic force can offer the same sense of solace and ability to make things right.
The singer believes that God is watching over them and that all is well, even in the darkest of times. They are aware that there is an invisible realm beyond this physical world where angels battle for souls. The singer finds themselves on their knees as a stranger in the land of Earth, needing an intervention to help them get through. They ask for a touch of providence, which will go beyond religion and touch their very circumstance.
The chorus asserts that God is there, watching over and guiding the singer. The power of God is supernatural, and it can be felt in the signs that are all around. The singer believes that God is beyond explanation and that some things cannot be explained, only experienced.
