Why is your heart...
Don't you know
That it shows in your eyes
Did you try to hide it
Keep the proofs inside you
Don't you know
You're the lonely runner
Not the only runner
And you keep on running
running away...
Are you looking for something
Could it be...
in the night you're waiting
as the lie keeps fading
You pretend ...

The lyrics to Robbie Dupree's song Lonely Runner is a melancholy tale of a person who is pretending to be happy and content but is really struggling with feelings of loneliness and heartache. The chorus repeats the phrase "You're the lonely runner, not the only runner" emphasizing the idea that everyone experiences heartbreak and loneliness at some point in their lives. The first verse speaks to the idea that love can be hard to hide and that it's often written all over a person's face. The second verse suggests that the person is trying to hide their pain and put on a facade, but the singer can see through their lies. The bridge offers a glimmer of hope that maybe the person is looking for something, but it's not clear if they are ever able to find it.
The song is a relatable and emotional reflection on the human experience of being alone, and struggling to connect with others. The lyrics are expertly crafted to convey a sense of longing and sadness, while the music provides a hauntingly beautiful backdrop to the tearful story. Dupree's performance is sincere and heartfelt, making Lonely Runner a timeless classic that still resonates with listeners today.

on Free Fallin'
Do you remember seem's like long ago
We used to swing outside the candy store
Pop on the cola they all knew the show
Oh the lonely ones with no place to go
We were free fallin', free fallin'
Now I wonder how the time went by
I never thought we'd say goodbye
Free fallin', free fallin'
Cause we're not the only ones
Who learn a long time ago
Do you remember nights on Bleecker St
All the old places where we used to meet
Back in the schoolyard playing Romeo
We were the only ones afraid to let go
We were free fallin', free fallin'
Now I wonder how the time went by
I never thought we'd say goodbye
Free fallin', free fallin'
Cause we're not the only ones
Who learn a long time ago

We were the lonely ones with no place to go
Afraid to let go... ohh...
We were free fallin', free fallin'
Now I wonder how the time went by
I never thought we'd say goodbye
Free fallin', free fallin'
Cause we're not the only ones
Who learn a long time ago
Free fallin', free fallin'
Cause we're not the only ones
