Morning Sun
Robbie Williams & Gary Barlow Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

How do you rate the morning sun?
After a long and sleepless night
How many stars would you give to the moon?
Do you see those stars from where you are?
Shine on the lost and loneliest
The ones who can’t get over it

And you always wanted more than life
But now you don’t have the appetite
In a message to the troubadour
The world don’t love you anymore
Tell me how do you rate the morning sun

Stuck inside the rainbow years
And you could happen to me
‘Cause I’ve been close to where you are
I drove to places you have seen
It all seems so familiar
Like they’d been sent to kill ya

It doesn’t take an astronaut
To float into space is just a thought
The morning brings a mystery
The evening makes it history
Tell me how do you rate the morning sun

And the village drunk
Sadly passed away
It was a shame
I never knew his name
I wonder if he sat there every morning
And watched the sun rise

How do you rate the morning sun?
It was just too heavy for me
And all I wanted was the world
If you are the starlet in the sun
Don’t go wasting your time
‘Cause there is no finish line

And you don’t see anything
Not even love not anything
The night could take the man from you
A sense of wonder overdue
The morning brings a mystery

The evening makes it history
Who am I to rate the morning sun?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Robbie Williams & Gary Barlow's song "Morning Sun" are rich with introspection and reflection. The song begins with a question: "How do you rate the morning sun?", setting a reflective and meditative mood for the rest of the track. The first verse delves into the loneliness that can come after a long night, asking about the stars in the sky and touching on the idea of being lost and lonely. Despite this, the chorus remains optimistic, shining a light on those who are lost and promising a sense of wonder in the morning.

The second verse becomes more introspective, discussing the idea of feeling stuck in a period of life and referencing the passing of time. There is a sense of sympathy from the singer, who acknowledges that they too have felt the weight of the world. This sentiment is echoed in the bridge, which nods to the idea that everyone has different journeys and struggles. Ultimately, the song ends on a poignant note with the singer admitting they're not qualified to rate the morning sun.

This man has so many such beautiful songs that weren't big hits, that he doesn"t sing at concerts , that too few people know.

@Heidella

I listen to this song every morning..The morning sun goes through my house for 15 minutes each day and lights up the house with the most beautiful rays I've ever seen..I sit with a cup of coffee on the steps and watch it till it disappears..that's how I rate the morning sun.
