While Cray was among artists such as Stevie Ray Vaughan and George Thorogood who got wider radio airplay and regular MTV video exposure during the late 1980s, he started playing guitar in his early teens. At Denbigh High School in Newport News, Virginia, his love of blues and soul music flourished as he started collecting records. Originally, Robert Cray wanted to become an architect, but at about the same time he was going to study design in architecture he formed a local band "Steakface", described as "the best band from Lakewood you never heard of". Cray on guitar and vocals contributed greatly to Steakface's set list of songs by Jimi Hendrix, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Fleetwood Mac, the Grease Band, Blodwyn Pig, Jethro Tull, Forever More, Spirit, and The Faces.
By the time he was twenty, Cray had seen his heroes Albert Collins, Freddie King and Muddy Waters in concert, and decided to form his own band. His band started playing college towns on the west coast. After several years of regional success, Cray was signed to Mercury Records in 1982. His third release, Strong Persuader, received a Grammy Award, while the crossover single "Smokin' Gun" gave him wider appeal and name recognition.
By then Cray was an opening act for such major stars as Eric Clapton (who remains a friend to this day), and sold out larger venues as a solo artist. Cray has generally played Fender guitars (Telecasters and Stratocasters) and there are two signature Robert Cray Stratocasters models available from Fender.
Cray continues to record and tour.
Got To Make A Comeback
Robert Cray Lyrics

Always a cost
That I never bought
Till we
Start drifting apart
Now I find the loving you give
Is something I've got to feel
To your heart
I realize
A love that is lost
No greater cost
Than the pain
Of a broken heart
And I know that I've got to pay
Every night and day
Gotta make a comeback
To your heart
Girl when you said
Here's where it ends
Let's just be friends?
And I had to make a start
On a loving campaign
Just to win you back again
Gotta make comeback
To your heart
Gotta make a comeback
to your heart is a soulful song by Robert Cray that talks about a man's realization of the value of the love he never fully appreciated until it slipped away from him. He admits that he was always unwilling to invest in the relationship by fully returning the love he received, thus, pushing his lover farther away from him. He intones the pain of realizing that the love he took for granted is no longer there, and the only remedy is to make a comeback to her heart.
The singer acknowledges that losing love is a costly price to pay, especially when it leads to a broken heart. From the tone of the lyrics, it's evident that the singer truly wants to win back her heart, and he knows that the journey to redemption is a long one. He's willing to do whatever it takes, including embarking on a loving campaign that will convince her to give their love a second chance.
The song emphasizes the importance of investing in relationships, constantly showing love, and appreciating what you have before it's too late. It's a call to those who have ever taken love for granted or walked away from someone they loved without giving it their all to come back to the one place they know they belong – the heart of their lover.

Loving you was
Being in love with you always had its price
Always a cost
It required a sacrifice on my part to keep loving you
That I never bought
I never fully accepted the toll it took on me
Till we
This changed when
Start drifting apart
We began to lose our connection
Now I find the loving you give
But now I realize that your love
Is something I've got to feel
Is something I must experience again
Gotta make comeback
I have to make a return
To your heart
To your affection
I realize
I now understand that
A love that is lost
A love that has vanished
No greater cost
There is no more significant expense
Than the pain
Than the anguish
Of a broken heart
Of a love that has crumbled
And I know that I've got to pay
I understand that I have to make amends
Every night and day
Every waking moment
Girl when you said
When you declared, my dear
Here's where it ends
That this is where our love concludes
Let's just be friends?
And suggested we stay as mere companions?
And I had to make a start
At that point, I knew I had to take action
On a loving campaign
I began to campaign for your heart with tenderness
Just to win you back again
With the sole aim of getting you to love me again
Gotta make comeback
I must make a return
To your heart
To your love, my sweet
