While Cray was among artists such as Stevie Ray Vaughan and George Thorogood who got wider radio airplay and regular MTV video exposure during the late 1980s, he started playing guitar in his early teens. At Denbigh High School in Newport News, Virginia, his love of blues and soul music flourished as he started collecting records. Originally, Robert Cray wanted to become an architect, but at about the same time he was going to study design in architecture he formed a local band "Steakface", described as "the best band from Lakewood you never heard of". Cray on guitar and vocals contributed greatly to Steakface's set list of songs by Jimi Hendrix, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Fleetwood Mac, the Grease Band, Blodwyn Pig, Jethro Tull, Forever More, Spirit, and The Faces.
By the time he was twenty, Cray had seen his heroes Albert Collins, Freddie King and Muddy Waters in concert, and decided to form his own band. His band started playing college towns on the west coast. After several years of regional success, Cray was signed to Mercury Records in 1982. His third release, Strong Persuader, received a Grammy Award, while the crossover single "Smokin' Gun" gave him wider appeal and name recognition.
By then Cray was an opening act for such major stars as Eric Clapton (who remains a friend to this day), and sold out larger venues as a solo artist. Cray has generally played Fender guitars (Telecasters and Stratocasters) and there are two signature Robert Cray Stratocasters models available from Fender.
Cray continues to record and tour.

One more chance
That's all he needs is one more chance
Just let me prove that my love is real
Baby, won't you let me show ya how I feel?
All he wants is one
That's all he needs
To make things right
Why can't you see
That my love is true?
Can't you see that I'm still in love with you?
I don't care what's in the past
It's all over
It's all gone
It's all gone
I don't care what people say
I know that you're the one
If you give him one
One more chance
That's all he needs is one more chance
If you let me try
I'll make you see
Oh, yeah
The only man you'll ever need in life is me
If you give him one
One more chance
That's all he needs is one more chance
If you let me try
I'll make you see
Oh, yeah
The only man you'll ever need in life is me
If you give him one
All I need is just one more chance, baby
If you give him one
All I need is just one mo' chance
To show how much love, yeah
Just let the groove it from love enter
Real, all I need
Is one more
They don't know how much I love ya, love ya, love ya, love ya, baby
Can't you see that the love is getting real, getting real
The song Won't You Give Him by Robert Cray was released in his album Strong Persuader in 1986. The song is about a man who has lost his lover and is seeking one more chance to prove his love. The song starts with the repeated line 'If you give him one, one more chance, that's all he needs is one more chance' which sets the tone of the song as a plea for forgiveness.
The first verse of the song presents the man's request to his lover to prove his love and affection. The man is asking his lover to give him a chance to show that he is sincere and his love is real. The second verse is about the man's plea for just one more night with his lover to make things right between them. He believes that if his lover gives him one more night, it will be enough to bring them back together.
The chorus of the song is a repetition of the same line, which emphasizes the man's desperate plea for one more chance. He doesn't care about the past and what people say, all he wants is to be with his lover. The song ends on a hopeful note with the man reassuring his lover that all he needs is just one more chance to show how much he loves her.
