He got the crowd to do a poly-rhythm of 7 and 5, man is a legend.

@heatherperleberg7816

*Polymeter, notable difference. Still really cool.

@RobertoReyesChHC

@@heatherperleberg7816 Hmmm. I swear I heard everyone land on 1 perfectly after cycling through each rhythm enough to make it fit metrically before they stopped. If it was poly-meter then that would just be a bunch of subdivisions that add up to whatever time you'd like to be in. Now I'm going to analyze the clapping lol I dont know if he just made people stop abruptly without each rhythmic cycle ending where its supposed to.

For the record: Poly-rhythm = juxtaposition of two rhythms that can fit into each other and end together perfectly at a certain point.

Poly-meter = permutations of rhythmic meter to add up to a time that you'd like for example: 5+5+6 can have a 4/4 pattern over it since it adds up to 16 or 7+7+2

@heatherperleberg7816

@@RobertoReyesChHC My definition of polyrhythm is 2 or more different note amounts fitting into the same space. A polymeter, as ive heard it, is 2 (or more, i guess) different meters played at once. In this instance, two groups are clapping 2 different times, one group in 5, the other in 7. Eventually, the downbeats will re-sync. For the group in 5 to resync, it will take 7 measures. The group in 7 will take 5 measures.

"Nested Tuplets" immediately came to mind! I see what you mean and now you just blew my mind! Basically subdivisions occuring within the same space, hearing 4 notes of something but also 5 at the same time or hemiola . Ending right on the downbeat! I knew this already with Hemiola 3 over 2. Thank you for clearing this up.

@heatherperleberg7816

@@RobertoReyesChHC Correct, but I think on a smaller scale (like separating the rhythms into individual phrases in a repeated sense) it is probably helpful to consider it 2 different spaces. if you'd like to hear some of this in practice, I'd recommend Larks Tongues in Aspic part IV. The song Discipline might also catch your eye

One thing King Crimson had that a lot of other bands that used odd time signatures didn't, was that you felt completely at home with an odd time signature without even realizing that it was an odd time signature, and one could dance to it, sing along without effort and mental contortion.

I remember looking at the tabs for "The Night Watch", after knowing it and singing along with it for nearly 20 years, and being astonished to see how many of the segments were in 13/8.
