1) American rockabilly revivalist Robert Gordon (March 29, 1947 – October 18, 2022) grew up in Bethesda, M.D., a suburb of Washington D.C. Unlike many of his heroes, he had a relatively comfortable childhood. At a young age, after hearing Elvis Presley's Heartbreak Hotel, he was inspired to choose R'n'R as his future career path, according to Wikipedia. In the mid-seventies Gordon was a part of the then-flourishing downtown NYC punk scene, fronting the CBGB regulars, Tuff Darts (who appear on an early CBGB live compilation album). After recording one album with the band ("All for the Love of Rock 'n' Roll) he parted ways with the band to work with such artists as Link Wray and Chris Spedding, both of whom share a love for early rock 'n' roll and rockabilly. Bruce Springsteen wrote the song, Fire, for Gordon and played piano on the studio version which also features the guitar-legend Link Wray.

She's Not Mine Anymore
Robert Gordon Lyrics

I guess I always knew
That she wanted more from me
Than I had, you see
I knew what I was heading for
I got to be strong inside
'Cause it hurts my pride
To know she's not mine anymore
Well alright, okay, I tried
To make her stay
But she wanted more from me
Than I had, you see
I gave until there was no more
I'm gonna be strong somehow
'Cause it's over now
I know she's not mine anymore
I guess I'll be finding out
How to do without
The woman I was living for
I got to be strong inside
'Cause it hurts my pride
To know she's not mine anymore
She wanted more from me
Than I had, you see
And I gave until there was no more
And I'm gonna be strong somehow
'Cause it's over now
I know she's not mine... anymore
The song "She's Not Mine Anymore" by Robert Gordon talks about a man who has just lost his woman. He admits to always knowing that she wanted more from him than he was able to give her. He now regrets not being stronger and not providing her with what she wanted. The opening line of the song, "Now she's gone, it's true. I guess I always knew," expresses a sense of inevitability that he knew the relationship was not built to last. The regretful tone is conveyed in lines like "I knew what I was heading for" and "I gave until there was no more."
The singer appears to be struggling with his pride and the feeling of powerlessness over the situation. He tried everything he could to make her stay, but it still wasn't enough. He even hints at future independence without her when he sings, "I guess I'll be finding out how to do without the woman I was living for."
Overall, the lyrics convey a sense of missed opportunity and regret. The singer is remorseful for not giving his best in the relationship and wishes he had been stronger. The song is a reminder that relationships require sacrifice and effort, and that taking things for granted can lead to pain and heartbreak.
