There are no human races. So yes, it is not the same as ethnicity. But we are not talking about science here. People use to use race as equivalent to ethnicity. We are talking about people who use to think that.

The minority who dealt with trade and/or lived near trade hubs. But knowing that arabs looks one way is not enough to form nationalist models.
The ones who depicted Ancient Egyptians looking like Europeans where intellectuals. The great majority where farmer who never left their village. People who where born and died in their village.
Even the ones who now and then saw a strange looking person didn't get a grasp of there being a different culture, just weird people.
If the ruins of the Ancient Egyptians where as unknown to Europeans as Aliens is to us then they didn't know shit in other words. We do not know if aliens even exist.

There is no astronomical manifesto. Doesn't mean that academia doesn't have any standard models. There was a communist manifesto because he was the only one in academia who was a socialist and anarchist while managing to become an important part of idea history.

We are not talking about people pointing out that there are foreign cultures and people. We are not talking about the notion that there are people nearby and that they are different nearby.
We are talking about people with so much knowledge about the world that they can feel comfortable with writing down lines on maps showing which areas that are populated bye certain cultures. People where doing this so frequently that it hade become an important topic with in academia.
Nationalism was in some way a protoscience, though plagued with pseudoscience.

Nationalism was not about the building of countries originally. It was an explanation behind the wide spread variety of cultures, languages and appearances. It wasn't just a simple observation, but the step beyond that. It wasn't a roman warlord observing that their enemies where different from them and not all the same.

There was a concept of other people, but it was not very intellectual. This was the era when governments where sending out scientists to across the world to study stars.
People where not just thinking us and them. Academia was revolutionizing what we today call anthropology.

Nationalism was not a political movement to draw lines on a map. It was a movement of academia. It was certainly used bye governments. But this was not China level of control over what science should and shouldn't say.
There has always been state driven pushes for conformity. It is not something that defines nationalism or is due to nationalism. Nationalism can be exploited as a motivation for it. Just like how the CCP exploited theories about viral spread prevention to control the people. That doesn't mean that the CCP invented those theories.

The political historical narrative of the 18th, 19th and early 20th century was mainly capitalism and imperialism. Nationalism and racism was nothing else but cultural and idea history till the later half of that period. This was when these ideas began to seriously influence anti-imperialist movements.
While the anti imperialist movements where not formed alone, nationalism still highly legitimized them. The idea that nations should rule them selves gave the anti imperialist wave legitimacy from a lot of people living in places like England, Austria, Sweden, Holland, France and so on.

I already guessed that you where not a nationalist haha.

@Electro-Cute Okay, we are mixing up a bunch of things here. First,

"When medieval Christians imagined the ancient Egyptians they made paintings making them look like medieval Europeans. The Egyptians was thought of as a people similar to the Christians, but with the difference that they were bad."

Ethnicity =/= Race. Most European ethnic groups have never been able to tell each other based on looks alone, especially neighbors. Medieval Europeans (especially Northern Europeans) generally didn't have a great grasp of what non-Europeans looked like, that doesn't really mean anything in terms of their identity. If they did imagine Egyptians as European-looking, it's for the same reason we imagine aliens as human looking - we are ignorant as to what they might actually look like.

Second, on the broad point, I agree that nationalism grew out of the Early Modern period. However, I think saying 'The most popular idea was that god created nations/people/ethnicities with the an inherent intellectual adaptation to the area they lived in. It was believed that culture was mainly inherited biologically.' is massively oversimplifying things.

Nationalism wasn't a coherent ideological program. There was no nationalist equivalent of the Communist Manifesto or a Nationalist Adam Smith. Sure, some geographical determinism was espoused by a lot of people, but citing that as the single be-all-and-end-all reason people believed Nations were a thing and were important overlooks a lot of the socio-economic and institutional processes that led nations to be salient.

People have always believed that culture and characteristics are inherited. I have a strong interest in Antiquity, and I can tell you that the Greeks, Romans, Parthians and every other ancient group I've encountered were obsessed with categorising people into ethnic groups - half of Tacitus is talking about how a particular germanic tribe belongs to a particular ethnic category or another, and the inherent characteristics different tribes of people posses. Moving forward - if you read Bede or Gildas, I can assure you Welsh and English people have regarded each other as different since long before Wales or England existed as unified entities and after they were both Christian. The name Welsh actually originally meant 'foreigner' (ironic seeing as the Anglo-Saxons were the invaders, but I digress). I'm less familiar with history outside Europe, but as far as I can tell it's pretty similar everywhere.

People didn't think they belonged to a global brotherhood of man before nationalism came and ruined things - at most you had concepts like 'Christendom' or the Islamic 'Ummah', but those identities mainly relevant where heathens were concerned.

To go from that to believing that ethnic groups ought to form the basis of political organisation was not a huge leap.

What I do agree with was that nationalism was a political project that involved a lot of drawing lines on maps, forcing conformity and suppressing divergent identities. France is the perfect example - making the 'French' a thing involved a lot of suppressing regional identities (e.g. Bretons, Occitanians, Gascons). Why did authorities want to do that? Well, during the phase of Absolute Monarchy it was because powerful french monarchs like Louis XIV wanted to seize political control from the nobility and build state power in the process. That project carried on after the revolution. It was a political thing - there wasn't necessary any mapped out belief in inherent nations defined by god behind it - Absolute Monarchs wanted to control their territories and encouraging/forcing their subjects to conform was helpful to that goal. At the same time, after the Reformation you had the European Wars of religion, and the populace didn't want to be ruled by people with different religious beliefs to them e.g. Protestants being ruled by Catholic Habsburg - (I think you got confused, I was not talking about European Imperialism before). So you had a state-driven push for conformity for political reasons from above, and a popular push for people being ruled by those 'like them' from below - nationalism was one result.

I just do not buy that nationalism was all about proto-racism - that seems to me like you are just forcing European history to conform to some grand narrative about racism. Also, for the record, I'm not a nationalist - If I could vote to live under a world government, I would in a heartbeat.
