Hell Hound On My Trail
Robert Johnson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I got to keep movin', I've got to keep movin'
Blues fallin' down like hail, blues fallin' down like hail

Umm mmm mmm mmm
Blues fallin' down like hail, blues fallin' down like hail

And the days keeps on worryin' me,
There's a hellhound on my trail,
Hellhound on my trail, hellhound on my trail

If today was Christmas eve
If today was Christmas eve,
And tomorrow was Christmas day

If today was Christmas eve,
And tomorrow was Christmas day
(Aow, wouldn't we have a time, baby?)
All I would need my little sweet rider just,
To pass the time away, huh huh, to pass the time away

You sprinkled hot foot powder, mmm
Mmm, around my door, all around my door
You sprinkled hot foot powder, mmm,
All around your daddy's door, hmm hmm hmm
It keep me with ramblin' mind, rider
Every old place I go, every old place I go

I can tell, the wind is risin',
The leaves tremblin' on the tree,
Tremblin' on the tree
I can tell, the wind is risin',
Leaves tremblin' on the tree
Hmm hmm mmm mmm
All I need's my little sweet woman,

And to keep my company, hmmm hmm, hey hey
My company

Overall Meaning

Hell Hound On My Trail is a blues song that is often considered one of Robert Johnson's most haunting and powerful recordings. The lyrics speak of a constant struggle, the feeling that everything in life is against you and that you can never stop moving. The phrase "hellhound on my trail" is used to describe this feeling, suggesting that the singer is being pursued by something dark and dangerous. The blues falling down like hail is a metaphor for the constant barrage of hardships that the singer is experiencing, much like being pelted by a hailstorm.

The song's opening lines set the mood for the rest of the track and reinforce the feeling of being hunted. This sense of fear and unease is compounded by the lyrics that follow, which describe the singer's attempts to escape his pursuer. The Christmas Eve and Christmas Day references serve as a contrast to the rest of the song's dark imagery. They provide a brief moment of relief from the constant terror of being followed by the hellhound.

The reference to hot foot powder is also interesting, as it was a common hoodoo practice used to ward off evil spirits and protect against negative energy. However, in this context, it appears that the powder has been used to further ensnare the singer, keeping him with a rambling mind and preventing him from ever finding a sense of peace.

I don't want to attack you on a personal level, but based on your reply I can't say too much for your reading comprehension.

I think you missed the part where I said that you cannot accurately judge the validity of my research, evidence or theory because you have not seen my research or evidence that my theory is based on.

I cannot relay the evidence to you in text because it can only be communicated in video/documentary form. And I haven't started making the video yet because I am busy finishing up my "chemtrail" debunking video.

Be careful using the word "troll". You might end up with a persecutory paranoid delusion like the "chemtrail" believers who call me a troll or government shill when I explain to them the science that explains why contrails can persist. ;)

In short, I don't believe anything unless there is evidence for it.
That's the best way to avoid believing things that are not true and becoming belief-based or delusional.

I hope you feel really smart and superior right now and have a "boosted" ego! Otherwise you're just wasting your time!
