In 1963 under the moniker Bob Revvel he formed the band "The Yelping Jackals". In 1967 he switched to front another band Gloria, later renamed Unit Gloria. He left the group to work on a solo career.
He released his first solo album, Vroeger Of Later, on which he criticised Dutch politics and sung about homosexuality and the Church, which was very unusual for that time. Vroeger Of Later sold over 500.000 copies and spent 118 week in the charts. A unique feat for an album made in the Dutch language.
Between 1974 and 1986 Robert Long worked on several theatre shows, mostly based on his songs and records. When he got tired of touring he started a career as a TV host. For seven years, he hosted the popular VARA game show Tien Voor Taal.
He returned to the stage in 1996 with the show Nu, a collection of new and old songs.
In 2002 Long released his critically acclaimed album Brand!, on which he returned to the sound of his first album. Due to health problems Long had to cancel the second leg of his Brand! tour.
In 2005 Long married his long-time boyfriend and manager Kristof Rutsaert. The wedding took place on the border of The Netherlands and Belgium, as Rutsaert is from Belgium and Long was Dutch.
After recovery he started to work on new material for a new tour, 'n Duivels Genoegen. Just before the tour started Robert Long suffered a heart-attack. Again he was forced to cancel his shows to concentrate on his recovery. Autumn '06 the CD was released which was supposed to accompany the cancelled tour.
In December 2006, the news was announced Long had cancer. Robert Long died in Antwerp (Belgium) on 13 December 2006, at the age of 63.

'k Hou me goed, je ziet dus
Dat ik 't begin te leren
The song “Flink zijn” by Robert Long tells the story of someone who is about to say goodbye to their partner. The singer is looking at their partner’s face while they sleep beside them on Sunday morning, knowing that their partner will soon leave them for someone else. The singer acknowledges that it can be hard to let go, but they need to be brave and get through it. They urge themselves to be “flink”, which means courageous or tough in Dutch. They know they may need to wait for a long time, but they will keep waiting until they stop thinking about their partner, until they are as free and indifferent as their partner is now. In the end, the singer says they will wait until they no longer love their partner, even if it takes them a while to get there.
The song is a poignant reflection on the emotions of heartbreak, acceptance, and growth. The singer is coming to terms with the fact that their partner is leaving them for someone else, and they need to learn how to let go and move on. The lyrics convey a sense of sadness, but also a determination to be strong and resilient. Overall, the song is a powerful reminder that it is possible to overcome heartbreak and that it takes time, patience, and courage to do so.

Tien uur, zondagmorgen
It's Sunday morning at 10 o'clock
En ik kijk naar je gezicht
I'm looking at your face
Nu nog lig je naast me
You're still lying next to me
En je ogen zijn nog dicht
Your eyes are still closed
After today you won't be with me anymore
There's someone else you care more about
't Kan gebeuren
It can happen
Flink zijn, even flink zijn
Be strong, be really strong
And even though it may take a long time, I'll wait until I don't think about you anymore
I'll wait until I'm free and just as far along as you are
So wait until I don't love you anymore
Twee uur, zondagmiddag
It's Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock
Al je spullen staan al klaar
All of your things are already packed
Koffers en wat dozen
Suitcases and some boxes
Ik kijk er af en toe eens naar
I look at them from time to time
I feel terrible, but I don't say it
'k Hou me goed, je ziet dus
I'm holding it together, you can see
Dat ik 't begin te leren
That I'm beginning to learn how to do it

Flink zijn - Robert Long (liedtekst)
Tien uur, zondagmorgen
't Kan gebeuren
Refrein:
'k Hou me goed, je ziet dus
Dat ik 't begin te leren
Refrein
Zes uur, zondagavond
"Nou, tot ziens" zeg jij, "ik ga"
Afscheid aan de voordeur
Jij rijdt weg, ik staar je na
Waarom schreeuw ik niet
Zijn m'n ogen droog
't Is misschien net iets te vaak gebeurd
Om nog te huilen
Refrein

Prachtig lied. Schitterend vertolkt door Robert Long. Niemand zal dit ooit beter kunnen doen.

Robert came to visit me (from his home in Italy with his Saab) while I stayed in Holland. This is one of those people that can break your heart apart with words alone. RIP, my friend. You left more honesty than most ever will.
Tony Legend
Stringsman P.J.Rechsteiner
special memories, cherish them. he was a great songwriter. saw him hom one......when I was young. but I got influenced through my mom who had all his albums....
