In 1963 under the moniker Bob Revvel he formed the band "The Yelping Jackals". In 1967 he switched to front another band Gloria, later renamed Unit Gloria. He left the group to work on a solo career.
He released his first solo album, Vroeger Of Later, on which he criticised Dutch politics and sung about homosexuality and the Church, which was very unusual for that time. Vroeger Of Later sold over 500.000 copies and spent 118 week in the charts. A unique feat for an album made in the Dutch language.
Between 1974 and 1986 Robert Long worked on several theatre shows, mostly based on his songs and records. When he got tired of touring he started a career as a TV host. For seven years, he hosted the popular VARA game show Tien Voor Taal.
He returned to the stage in 1996 with the show Nu, a collection of new and old songs.
In 2002 Long released his critically acclaimed album Brand!, on which he returned to the sound of his first album. Due to health problems Long had to cancel the second leg of his Brand! tour.
In 2005 Long married his long-time boyfriend and manager Kristof Rutsaert. The wedding took place on the border of The Netherlands and Belgium, as Rutsaert is from Belgium and Long was Dutch.
After recovery he started to work on new material for a new tour, 'n Duivels Genoegen. Just before the tour started Robert Long suffered a heart-attack. Again he was forced to cancel his shows to concentrate on his recovery. Autumn '06 the CD was released which was supposed to accompany the cancelled tour.
In December 2006, the news was announced Long had cancer. Robert Long died in Antwerp (Belgium) on 13 December 2006, at the age of 63.

The lyrics to Robert Long's song "Jij en ik" are about feeling sad, angry and powerless about the state of the world. The songwriter is watching as his ideals die one by one, and he feels like nothing he does makes a difference. He's tempted to give up the fight because he feels like those who play dirty have already won, and that the real power lies with those who are willing to use tanks and guns. He feels like it's impossible to win against those who are so ruthless and that the entire system is rigged against the common person.
Despite his feelings of hopelessness, the songwriter takes comfort in his relationship with the person he's singing to. He says that they are each other's last hope in a world that seems to be falling apart. Although he sometimes lashes out at this person out of frustration, he knows deep down that they are his only refuge in a world that feels like it's about to end. He hopes that by standing together, they can face the dangers that lie ahead and that they can find some sense of peace.
Overall, the song is a poignant plea for hope and togetherness in the face of overwhelming despair. It speaks to the difficulty of coming to terms with a world that seems to be going off the rails and the importance of finding someone to cling to in hard times.

The future is almost over, you’re my last anchor.
I really mean that, even when I hurt you out of pure despair.
Want jij en ik, dat is waar
Because you and I, that’s what matters.
We horen bij elkaar
We belong together.
O God, dat hoop ik maar, jij en ik
Oh God, I hope so, you and me.
Er dreigt zoveel gevaar
So much danger is looming.
Maar we schuilen bij elkaar
But we take shelter with each other.
Your cheek pressed against my hair, you and me.

I'm afraid not, but here's an English translation. It's quite literal and a rather hard song to translate: Robert Long was famous for his incredibly powerful, poetic lyrics and this is one of these songs. Besides English not being my main language, poetic English is a whole step further ;) There are probably very pretty words out there for the ones I used, it just would take weeks for me to find them ;)
I included some time-stamps should you get lost during listening.
The * is for Annie M.G. Schmidt, a Dutch female writer who is considered the queen of Dutch children's literature, and the mother of theatrical songs (which usually featured lyrical jokes in them). As I have no idea of her popularity outside the Netherlands, I mention this. Many Dutch kids grew up with her stories of Jip en Janneke.
I am sad and angry
I feel so powerless
my ideals are dying one by one
even though you try your best
it doesn't help at all
it only gets more awful
around us
0:43
sometimes I think ah forget it
there's no use in fighting
as who plays dirty has won before they even started
you can only win with tanks and with cannons
and against such not a sensible person can do a thing
1:13
and if you do fight, you fight against better judgement
the decision over us has been made in quiet
it's all about power as power's money
and you protect it with violence
and who's not with us is mad or at least an anarchist
1:48
sometimes I get despondent
if I reach my fifties
without a war or some toxic cloud that'd be a miracle
because I think we will be going to hell even sooner
the madhouse has already collapsed earlier in time
2:19
than I get scared, and panic gets to me
I want to flee
but as Annie Schmidt* has wrote, that's impossible now
the future is almost gone
my last foothold you're the one
I really mean it
even when I sometimes hurt you in pure despare
2:54
Because you and me that is true
we are meant for eachother
oh god I really hope so
you and me
there's danger looming everywhere
but we take refuge at eachother
your cheek against my hair, you and me.
Hope this is satisfactory ;)
