In 1963 under the moniker Bob Revvel he formed the band "The Yelping Jackals". In 1967 he switched to front another band Gloria, later renamed Unit Gloria. He left the group to work on a solo career.
He released his first solo album, Vroeger Of Later, on which he criticised Dutch politics and sung about homosexuality and the Church, which was very unusual for that time. Vroeger Of Later sold over 500.000 copies and spent 118 week in the charts. A unique feat for an album made in the Dutch language.
Between 1974 and 1986 Robert Long worked on several theatre shows, mostly based on his songs and records. When he got tired of touring he started a career as a TV host. For seven years, he hosted the popular VARA game show Tien Voor Taal.
He returned to the stage in 1996 with the show Nu, a collection of new and old songs.
In 2002 Long released his critically acclaimed album Brand!, on which he returned to the sound of his first album. Due to health problems Long had to cancel the second leg of his Brand! tour.
In 2005 Long married his long-time boyfriend and manager Kristof Rutsaert. The wedding took place on the border of The Netherlands and Belgium, as Rutsaert is from Belgium and Long was Dutch.
After recovery he started to work on new material for a new tour, 'n Duivels Genoegen. Just before the tour started Robert Long suffered a heart-attack. Again he was forced to cancel his shows to concentrate on his recovery. Autumn '06 the CD was released which was supposed to accompany the cancelled tour.
In December 2006, the news was announced Long had cancer. Robert Long died in Antwerp (Belgium) on 13 December 2006, at the age of 63.

Achteraf mijn eetlust steeds laten bederven
Want neem zo'n spleetoog nou eens Mien
Kommie?
The song "Mien" by Robert Long is a satirical take on the frustrations and confusions of a common man named Mien with the society around him. Mien questions the actions of the people who protest on television, shows that depict depressing news which spoil his appetite, and the general state of society. He showcases his apathy towards the matters concerning social welfare and environment, beliefs that reflect the rugged individualism characteristic of the blue-collar working class. Mien also makes controversial comments on the Vietnamese war, homosexuality, and racism, which were some of the issues affecting the world in the late 1970s. As the song draws to a close, Mien attempts to remove himself from these troubles and heads to bed, satisfied with the prospect of an enjoyable weekend.
The lyrics of the song depict how Mien is frustrated with the situation around him. Mien is shown to be a person who prefers an easy life and does not want to get involved with anything which can create problems for him. In this sense, the song is a commentary on the pervasive apathy in society towards the problems that plague it. The song also highlights the influence of mass media on people's opinions and the limitations on free speech manifested in the media censorship. Overall, the song portrays the outlook of a common man who is jaded with the world, and his only purpose is to work hard and relax over the weekend.

Dat is waarom zo'n maffe lijp
Is why such a crazy person
Op de televisie gaat staan protesteren
Goes on TV to protest
Laat hij bij zijn vriendjes thuis
Let him do it at his friends' place
In zo'n kraakpand vol met luis
In a squatters' house filled with lice
To annoy those on welfare
Als ik mijn kijkgeld nou betaal
If I pay for my TV
Waarom moet ik dan door het journaal
Why do I have to see on the news
Achteraf mijn eetlust steeds laten bederven
Stuff that ruins my appetite afterwards
Denk ik dat het fris is, Mien
I think it's fresh, Mien
Wanneer ze steeds weer laten zien
When they keep showing
That a bunch of black people are dying

It used to be different before
Met Lou van Burg en met Carrell
With Lou van Burg and Carrell

Maar dat zie je haast niet meer
But you hardly see that anymore
En steeds verpeste ze de sfeer
And they keep ruining the atmosphere
With disasters or environmental issues
Wat koop ik voor dat slap gelul
What do I get out of that nonsense
Of hasjies en dat spul
Or hashish and stuff like that
Van die lang behaarde vieze gore zwijnen
From those long-haired dirty pigs
In een kamp en dan castreren
Put them in a camp and castrate them
Nou dan zouden ze wel leren
Then they would learn their lesson
En die rottroep zou al gauw verdwijnen
And that crap would soon disappear
En dat gekanker op Vietnam
And the complaining about Vietnam
Toen die Nixon daar niet kwam
When Nixon didn't come
We would've been under communist rule for a long time
Het is maar goed dat hij er is
It's good that he's there
Want anders ging het zeker mis
Otherwise, things would've gone wrong for sure
And he's, after all, a committed Christian
Want neem zo'n spleetoog nou eens Mien
Just take a look at those Asian eyes, Mien
Je kan toch zo in eenklap zien
You can immediately see
That all those perverts collude with the Russians
Van alle zeden zijn ze wars
They are opposed to all morals
Bij vrouwen zit hij overdwars
He crosses his legs when sitting with women
No, let it burn and don't put it out for a while
En neem nou eens zo'n autoweg
And take a look at a highway, for example
Als ik die door een bos aanleg
If I build it through a forest
As the government, I should know what to do
Het gaat tenslotte om de poen
After all, it's about the money
What does a small piece of greenery matter
Ze moeten dat geouwehoer maar eens vergeten
They should forget about that nonsense
Nee het is een vuile kliek
No, it's a dirty clique
En ook bij ons op de fabriek
And also at our factory
There's a guy they keep bothering
Maar dat is een flikker Mien
But he's a gay, Mien
En dat ken je zo wel zien
And you can see that easily
So we beat him up
Nou ik ben het aardig zat
Well, I've had enough of it
Let's just go to bed
I feel so full, it's from the food
Ook al is het vrijdag schat
Even though it's Friday, honey
Ik heb echt geen zin in "dat"
I really don't feel like that
So let's just forget about it this week
Want morgenochtend weer vroeg op
Because we have to get up early tomorrow morning
Dan moet de auto in het sop
Then we have to clean the car
Because it's been a week or two already
Zo met het weekend voor de deur
With the weekend coming up
En effe lekker uit de sleur
And taking a break from the daily routine
I'm reasonably satisfied overall
Hee Mien, ga je mee? We gaan naar bed
Hey Mien, are you coming? We're going to bed
Mien, wordt eens wakker
Mien, wake up
Put on your slippers, we're going to bed
Het is mooi geweest voor vandaag
It's been good for today
Kommie?
Are you coming?
