Sweet Lies

We gain a fake upper hand
We get outsmarted when we rediscover
We underplay
You took me in, I never minded
You broke the rules, I saw through you then
The tables turn on us
All those sweet lies, tear away the covers
And now we know not to underestimate
What hearts can do
You keep an eye on me
I?ll keep an eye on you
We tell sweet lies, fooling one another
We gain a fake upper hand
We get outsmarted when we rediscover
We underplay
You took me in, I never minded
You broke the rules, I saw through you then
What a surprise when we turn into lovers
We never guessed it could be
All those sweet lies, tear away the covers
The tables turn
We tell sweet lies, fooling one another
We gain a fake upper hand
We get outsmarted when we rediscover
We underplay
All those sweet lies, tear away the covers
In Robert Palmer's "Sweet Lies," the lyrics explore the idea of how people often deceive one another with lies and manipulations that they perceive to be harmless or beneficial. The song highlights the dangerous implications of these "sweet lies," as they can lead to misplaced trust and betrayal, especially when two people who have been lying to each other begin to fall in love.
The lines "What a surprise when we turn into lovers/The tables turn on us" depict the true complexity of human relationships and how emotions can shift power dynamics in unexpected ways. The chorus repeats the theme of "sweet lies" and how they can ultimately strip away any illusions of control or superiority that we may feel in our interactions with others.
The song touches on the importance of seeing through lies and manipulations, with the line "You broke the rules, I saw through you then." It suggests that true intimacy and trust can only come from honesty and commitment to being truthful, even when it may be uncomfortable or challenging.
Overall, "Sweet Lies" is a cautionary tale about the cost of deception in human relationships, revealing how "sweet lies" can lead to significant emotional turmoil and pain.
