Morning Dew
Robert Plant Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Walk me out in the morning dew my honey
Walk me out in the morning dew today;
Can't walk you out in the morning dew my honey
Can't walk you out in the morning dew today!

Thought I heard a young girl cry mama,
Thought I heard a young girl cry today-
You didn't hear no young girl crying mama,
You didn't hear no young girl cry today!

Thought I heard a young man cry mama-
Thought I heard a young man cry today-
You didn't hear no young man crying mama
You didn't hear no young man cry today!

Now, there's no more morning dew
Now, there's no more morning dew-

What they've been saying all these years is true
Now, there's no more morning dew!

Overall Meaning

In Robert Plant's song "Morning Dew," the lyrics paint a picture of a desolate and emotionally heavy environment. The first two lines depict a longing to walk with a loved one in the morning dew, but ultimately, the singer cannot fulfill that wish. The repeated line "Can't walk you out in the morning dew today" suggests that something has prevented the two from being together, perhaps indicating a loss of some kind.

From there, the lyrics shift to a hauntingly sad tone with the mention of hearing someone cry for their mother. The repetition of the phrase "Thought I heard a young [girl/man] cry mama" underscores the singer's sense of confusion or denial to accept the reality of the situation. The singer seems to be in a state of disbelief as the lines "You didn't hear no young [girl/man] crying mama. You didn't hear no young [girl/man] cry today" are repeated, almost as if trying to convince himself that everything is fine.

The final lines of the song, "Now, there's no more morning dew. What they've been saying all these years is true. Now, there's no more morning dew," leave a sense of finality and acceptance of the situation. The "morning dew" could be interpreted as a metaphor for hope, renewal, or a fresh start, and the lack of it suggests that there is no way to go back to what once was.

Overall, "Morning Dew" is a somber and reflective song that touches on themes of loss and acceptance, with a strong sense of longing for something that cannot be.

The more I listen to Robert and age, I understand his brilliance on such a remarkably different level. I have spent 35 years listening to him, his voice, his interpretations I am now understanding his brilliant arrangements and construction. It seems in someway the music all sounds new again. It’s a very strange but excellent experience.

There is true in what you say. Feel the same.

@victorrock1997

It truly feels the same for me as well, and I am barely 24! I grew up listening to Led Zeppelin and, concomitantly, I also started listening to his solo records and they totally fascinated me. They have a very warm, sensitive, delicate approach to the listener, regardless of his background, which, in any case, is always rather complex. All the best! :)

P.S.: Fate of Nations remains one of my all time most favourite rock records to this day! <3

Love this voice. An artist who went his own way and won♥♥In my opinion of course.

@dharmabeachbum6330

The Grateful Dead's version of this song is still my favorite, but it's incredible the way Robert can cover any song and interpret it as if he wrote it.

@DanA-gz5tn

Bonnie Dobson’s original is great
