My Hero
Robert Shaw Chorale and Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Would you dance if I asked you to dance?
Or would you run and never look back?
Would you cry if you saw me crying?
And would you save my soul tonight?
Would you tremble if I touched your lips?
Or would you laugh? Oh, please tell me this.
Now would you die for the one you love?
Oh hold me in your arms tonight.

I can be your hero baby
I can kiss away the pain
I will stand by you forever
You can take my breath away

Would you swear that you'll always be mine
Or would you lie? Would you run and hide?
Am I in too deep? Have I lost my mind?
I don't care. You're here tonight

I can be your hero baby
I can kiss away the pain

I will stand by you forever
You can take my breath away

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "My Hero" by the Robert Shaw Chorale and Orchestra is essentially a love song that explores the depth of one's love and commitment to their significant other. The song opens with a series of questions, which the singer uses to gauge how far their lover is willing to go for them. The singer asks if their lover would dance if they asked, if they would cry if they cried, if they would save their soul if it came down to it, and if they would tremble if they touched their lips. These questions symbolize the bond and connection the singer seeks from their lover.

The chorus then goes on to detail the singer's dedication to their partner, with lyrics that claim that they can be their hero and kiss away their pain. The singer pledges to stand by their lover forever and allow them to take their breath away. The second verse is a continuation of the questions in the first verse, but the singer is less concerned with the answers and more interested in the fact that their lover is there with them at that moment. The song is ultimately about the strength and depth of love which can be transformative and healing.

Robert Russell Bennett was the most phenomenal arranger. I've had the pleasure of conducting his pit-orchestrations many times over the years.

I seem to have known "My Hero" all of my life. Why isn't it better known? I'm having difficulty remembering who sang it when I was a kid. (A long and lovely time ago.)

@christianlibrul

Bless you for posting the Chorale. My cassette of the album is truly worn out.

@UnclaimedFr8

Thank you for that, Christian! I sincerely appreciate your commenting--the RSC was true class, and set the standard. Cassettes do wear, don't they? Best Regards, David
