Small Hours
Robert Smith Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Going to get on up and fly away
Go on out for another way
And a new day's dawn
Going to carry on

Keep on loving while your love is strong
Keep on loving 'til your love is gone away
Well you're very lovely, going to take you home
They say you'll be my ruin
Cos I love you so
I just love you so

Keep on loving 'til your love is gone

Keep on loving while your love is strong
All the way

The lyrics to Robert Smith's song "Small Hours" depict the theme of moving on from the past and seeking new beginnings. The first lines "Going to get on up and fly away / Go on out for another way" suggest leaving behind the past and exploring new opportunities. The phrase "And a new day's dawn / Going to carry on" reinforces the idea of moving forward and leaving the past behind. The overall message is to keep on loving and pursuing happiness even when facing uncertainty.

The lines "Well, you're very lovely, going to take you home / They say you'll be my ruin / Cos I love you so / I just love you so" show Robert's attraction to someone who is potentially dangerous and may cause harm or ruin to him. I'm a huge John Martyn fan and I adore this version, it's a fitting tribute from one extraordinarily talented man to another of the same ilk, fell asleep listening to this on my headphones last night, so relaxing.

You know what? I think youre right. And not only Great Britain but the world.
I know how cliche it sounds but this time im saying it seriously. Ive searched for tons of music and genres all my life, and the only thing I have clear is that TC has been truly the best.

@Two501

Credit for the song goes to John Martyn, but this cover by Robert Smith shows his respect for other writers and musicians, staying true to the original song yet still adding his finesse and nuance. A truly great homage and one of the best covers I've heard.

I would say John Martyn is the most underrated musician but hopefully tributes like this will open up a whole new audience to him. My first experience was hearing a cover of Couldn’t Love You More five years later I’m a Martyn nut.
