Reasons for Garrett to lie about who he killed;
1: If Garrett killed someone else, he and the posse could get into trouble. Thus the deputies were pressured into giving false testimony as to who died. You would think that the people attending the wake would speak up as to having the wrong dead man. But all the guests would have been Billy's friends who would understand the need to keep the lie going so to keep Billy safe.
2: At one time Garrett and Billy had a close friendship. Maybe Garrett saw this a chance to let Billy get away and start a new life. Yes I just did finish watching a review of the movie "Old Henry" that was based upon the idea that Billy got away.
3: There is disagreement as to whether Garrett got a bounty for, supposedly, killing Billy. But he sure was able to promote his "fame" and profit from it.
4: Claiming the Billy was dead could help calm down the Lincoln Count war. This would have been a hint to Billy to be elsewhere.

All of these reasons are interconnected. Garrett would have to have been real quick thinking to work all this out so quickly. But maybe he went to Maxwell's to warn Billy to get out of town before something bad happened. If someone else was killed, they were in the wrong place to get paranoid and pull a gun on Garrett. But a predisposition to essentially protect Billy may have made the leap to conspiracy easier.

This is much like the claims that John Wilkes Booth was not killed during the hunt for him, with someone ending up dead. Also that one or both of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid survived the shootout in South America. Maybe other infamous people were able to fake their deaths and seek a safer new existence. But as the presenter said, each case has to be investigated on its own.

Within minutes of the shooting the whole village of Fort Sumner was
present at Pete Maxwell's Home. Billy’s body was NOT guarded all night and the lawmen did not keep people from viewing it. Billy’s body was taken by the local residents of Fort Sumner and was dressed and then was laid out on a
carpenter’s bench where it was on public display all night! The following three statements below from eyewitnesses who were present when Billy the Kid was killed confirms this. It should also be known that no guy by the name of John

Vicente Otero, Saval Gutierez, and Antonio Savedra. It was Vicente Otero who dug the grave.

Poe…."Within a very short time after the shooting, quite a number of the native people had gathered around, some of them bewailing the death of their friend, while several women pleaded for permission to take charge of the body, which we allowed them to do. They carried it across the yard to a carpenter shop, where it was laid out on a workbench, the women placing lighted candles around it according to their ideas of properly conducting a 'wake' for the dead."

Paco Anaya…."Don Pedro took the $25 and he and Don Manuel Abreu went to the latter's store and bought a beige suit, a shirt, an undershirt, shorts, and a pair of stockings. I, the writer, and my brother, Higinio Garcia, and several others of those that were there, dressed Billy with these clothes then we laid him on a high bed, one of those narrow ones, and we took him to the saloon where they held dances. There we watched, and on the next day we buried him."

Jesus Silva...A few moments later I returned to the room, picked up the lifeless body of Billy and walking into a large hallway in the Maxwell home, laid his body on a long table. I there examined him again and ascertained without doubt he was dead. The body was then removed to an old carpenter shop where it was laid out. Of course an inquest had to be held.
There was no justice of the peace at the old Fort, so we dispatched a messenger for Alejandro Seguro, justice of the peace at a little town 10 miles up the river. Seguro came and the inquest was held.

Lie: George Coe never believed Billy the Kid was killed.
Fact: The above statement is an absolute lie! George Coe himself said he KNEW Billy was dead in his autobiography “Frontier Fighter” on p. 228. Here is Coe’s statement exactly as it was written. "Just recently the newspapers carried a story to the effect that Billy the Kid was living in obscurity on a ranch near Odessa, Texas. Nothing could be farther from the truth.
If the Kid were alive anywhere in the world, I should know it. There never was but one of his kind. A few years ago I decided to have his body removed to my place, and Miguel Otero came to see me, as he wanted the body taken to Santa Fe and given burial there. He went from my place to Fort Sumner and interviewed the commissioners there. He wrote me that neither he nor I could remove Billy's remains, as the commissioners said only a blood relation could have that done. So in a most remote spot at old Fort Sumner is the grave of Billy the Kid. It remained unmarked and unkept until 1932, when a headstone was erected through the efforts of Mr. Charles W. Foor.”

Lie: Brushy Bill knew way too much about Billy the Kid and the Lincoln County War to have read about it. He knew little details that were known to only a few people.
Fact: Actually Brushy didn’t know much at all about the life of Billy the Kid. He not only made numerous mistakes in his interviews, but totally omitted many important facts, such as his time spent in the Silver City jail for hiding stolen laundry and the killing of “Windy” Francis Cahill in Camp Grant Arizona on August 17, 1877. I have listed Brushy’s numerous errors below. It is very easy to see that he made way too many mistakes to have really been there! There are enough holes in his story to ride a horse through! During his interview with New Mexico Governor Thomas Mabry in 1950 he choked up and forgot everything including Pat Garrett’s name! ."

Fact: Aside from Brushy's fantasy gunfight with Garrett and his two deputies on the night Billy was killed, this is perhaps Brushy's biggest error. Frank Lobato definately did not bring him two horses, because he was not in Fort Sumner the night Billy was killed. This can be proven by Frank Lobato himself in a 1937 article called "Only One Man Living Who Saw Billy the Kid' in Both Life and Death" which appeared in the Clovis News Journal. Lobato said in this article that he was working on the old Pig Pen Ranch southwest of Melrose at the time of Billy's death, but that his mother, Marie Lobato was present and saw the body of Billy the Kid the morning it was laid to rest in the little cemetary down the valley. This proves he was definately not there and that more than likely Brushy completely made this up as well as the rest of his ridiculous claim.
Brushy claimed that a man named Billy Barlow was actually shot by Pat Garrett instead of Billy the Kid. There is no proof that a Billy Barlow ever existed. There is a song called "Billy Barlow" that was written in 1834. Coincidence? You decide!

In 1937 Jesus Silva was asked about the rumors that Billy the Kid might still be alive. Silva replied "That may be the rumor, my boy," he said, "but if there are dead men in this world, then Billy the Kid is among them. I know he is
dead and as far as I know I am the only one yet living who saw him in death."

Question: Why were there no photos taken of Billy's body?
Answer: There were no photos taken of Billy's body simply because there was no photographer in Fort Sumner back then. Unless you have been there you may not realize just how isolated Fort Sumner is even today. Especially back then!
The nearest photographer would have probably been in Las Vegas or Santa Fe. That would have been at least a three day ride for him just to get there.

Question:When was Brushy Bill Roberts born?
Answer: Brushy claimed many times according to Hico residents that he was born in 1868, which makes him too young to be Billy the Kid. Here is an exact quote from the booklet "Billy the The (alias Brushy Bill)The True Story" published by the Hico News Reveiw. "Brushy Bill had recounted often that his place of birth was Buffalo Gap in Taylor County, and the time was December 31, 1868, stating that he was born on the last day of the year. If correct, that would belie current tales being aired by daily newspapers linking his identity with that of a famous early-day character" 1868 is also the date which appeared on Brushy's original headstone.
On the "improved" headstone his birthdate has been changed from 12/31/1868 to 12/31/1859. At the time of Brushy's death he was claiming to have been born 12/31/68, which would explain why this date was put on his original stone. Brushy's real birthdate is August 26, 1879, but of course no self respecting tourist would buy into that big of an age gap.

Once Brushy got tired of claiming that he was a member of the James Gang, he then claimed to be Billy the Kid. At this time Brushy claimed that he was born in December of 1859 in Buffalo Gap, TX. There is one problem with this claim though. Buffalo Gap did not even exist at this time. In fact it was not founded until 1875! This can be confirmed by contacting the Buffalo Gap Historic Village at Po Box 818, Buffalo Gap, TX 79508. Brushy's niece Mrs. Geneva Roberts Pittmon however claimed in a letter to Billy the Kid Outlaw Gang founder Joe Bowlin that Brushy was born on August 26, 1879 and that she had the family Bible record to prove it. According to Geneva Pittmon Brushy Bill was her father Tom's brother. If that is correct, then Brushy Bill Roberts was only two years old when Billy the Kid was killed in 1881!

Question: Was Brushy Bill Roberts literate?
Answer: According to authors Frederick Bean and W.C. Jameson on p.204 of their book "The Return of the Outlaw Billy the Kid" "Evidence suggests Roberts possessed only rudimentary reading and writing skills. His wife, Melinda, wrote
letters for him. Examples of his penmanship in the possession of the authors show a scrawl not unlike that made by a four-year-old child."

Question: How many witnesses actually viewed Billy the Kid's body?
Answer: There are at least 28 witnesses known to recorded history to have viewed Billy's body. They are: Pat Garrett, John W. Poe, Kip McKinney, Pete Maxwell, Dona Luz Maxwell, Paulita Maxwell, Deluvina Maxwell, Odila Maxwell, Don Manuel Abreau, Don Pablo Beaubien, Dona Rebecca Beaubien, Paco Anaya, Jesus Silva, Jose Silva, Vicente Otero, Sabal Gutierrez, Celsa Gutierrez, Marie Lobato, Lorenzo Jaramillo, Antonio Savedra, Milnor Rudolph, Charles Rudolph, Higinio Garcia, Henry Lola, Cruz Trujillo, Alejandra Segura, Manuela Bowdre, Tom O'Folliard's commom law wife, and Pedro Antonio Lucero.

There is another NY Times newspaper article proving that Brushy Bill publicly and during a press conference claimed to be a member of the James Gang. Jesse James claimant J. Frank Dalton was proven to be a fake through DNA testing in the summer of 1995.

@Uncle. 7 years ago I am not sure if Pat did collect a bounty or not. But lots of marshals and deputies did collect bounties to supplement their income. They where required to follow the domain rules of a bounty hunter while doing so. And i believe the kid was a jail breaker at the time so there should have been a bounty on him.

I remember an episode of Unsolved Mysteries covering Brushy Bill Roberts possibly being Billy the Kid. Very interesting. Young Guns was narrated by an old Billy the Kid. The only way out for Billy was either death or faking his death.

Huh? The voice over in the beginning of Young Guns the movie was narrated by Emilio's brother Charlie Sheen who played "Dick" in the movie. Kiefer Sutherland who played "Doc" narrated the film towards the end, where he stated what happened to the surviving Regulators.

Or that Garrett was, more plausibly to me at least, less competent than he and those around him let on. That would be my bet. More likely, Garrett made a mistake in killing the wrong guy, made his own official story (especially considering just months later he wielded both the power of a U.S. Marshall AND County Sheriff), and then wrote a book on the events that were later (largely) proven to be fabrications. The clout chasing was real with this guy I think, but that's my 2 cents on the little I know about him. Not saying that he wasn't necessarily a competent cop in-general, but that maybe his pursuance of Billy was something he attached to his ego rather than his most underlying, deep morals, and he just wanted to finally be done with the whole thing and get the glory. If all true, then that just made him human. Though maybe less so than Billy The Kid.

@Jesus Garcia the analysis you're referring to took place in 1989, and it was using a custom made computer program not approved for use by law enforcement, but he still scored a 78% (42nd out of 150 (1st out of 150 would be 100%)). The second analysis in 1990 used the same software used by the FBI, CIA, and Interpol. That was the one that said it was a 93% match.

Thank you for an interesting report. I have always been interested in Billy the Kid and since hearing about Brushy Bill Roberts have had an open mind on his demise. I have read that someone said that Brushy Bill was not Billy because in the photos of both Billy and Brushy Bill the ears do not match, I have tried looking at the ears but for me it's difficult to tell, so now it's interesting that you say there is a 93 per cent proof that they are the same person, this goes against the idea that the ears are different. Another thing is I remember hearing about Brushy Bill being made to meet people who actually knew Billy and those people after speaking to him said, yes, that's really Billy. Another thing that people disagree on is that some say he was bad, but others say he wasn't and was just seeking revenge for the death of his friend and that the law in fact was corrupt. I'd like to think that he survived and became Brushy Bill. Thank you again for an interesting report.

Mens ears swell and change as they grow older. Pictures of my grandad in ww2 his ears much smaller and tucked back compared to the cauliflowers he was left with in his 90s lol. Also, blue eye, depigmentation occurs and they grey over time. Ive read Brushy had grey eyes, this could explain that. Especially depigmentation occurs in sunny places like the desert. Though im not 100% on garret not wanting to kill billy. Money is very seductive and fame even more. He did kill two of the other regulators.

They also argued that billy was right handed while brushy was left. But it turns out that brushy was ambidextrous. So yeah im almost 100% convinced he was telling the truth. So not to mention that pat garrison said that based of billys corpse, he had grown out his beard ( something he was known to not be able to do in his early 20's) and tanned his skin to look like a mexican. One of the people who knew billy the kid was asked to dig his grave and he was convinced the body they had was that of billy barlow a half mexican boy who resembled billy the kid but was able to grew facial hair way before billy was able to. Idk im almost 100 percent convinced as well. It seems likely that if someone were going to come out with the story brushy told, they would wait 70 years to tell it if they were going to at all.

I would recommend a book called " Billy the Kid the Lost interviews." By WC Jameson. They were audio tapes that were interviews of Brushy Bill done by a reporter in the 1950s. The tapes were lost until the 1990s and then they were transcribed as much as possible despite The condition of the tapes .
It contains these interviews and also much more in-depth information concerning the circumstances of Billy the Kids supposed death in 1881.

The story is quite fascinating. Being a South African and totally addicted to good western movies, I have done some research of all the great names of the old west. The exoneration of Billy The Kid in a modern review of circumstances etc. What would be more interesting though, is the whereabouts of Billy The kid at the time that Pat Garrett claimed that he shot Billy. They tried to exhume the bodies in 2003, but all the headstones had been washed away in 1903 by a massive flood. So they were unable to identify the actual graves.

I would like to add: Why would Pat Garrett need someone to identify Billy after he shot him? Pat had arrested him in 1881 ( later to escape killing 2 guards). So Pat should be very aware of how Billy looked and should be able to identify him.

I don't think he needed them to identify "Billy" it could have been more of a "yes he's deceased" type thing. Like witnesses to the supposed crime. It would be easier to identify Brushy Bill as Billy the Kid if we had autopsy pics(the gunshot wounds,old n new)would be good identifier s. (I know, autopsy photos wouldn't have been taken)

Jack you rock. Good presentation and I find your version to be more believable then Pat Garrets. The sheriffs back then especially in New Mexico were pretty much criminals themselves. Case closed. I remember hearing about Billy seeking immunity from the governor of New Mexico while he was still alive and he was never taken seriously by those in power that had nothing to gain from it.

Brushy was just a story teller, so was his friends, Morrisson and Sonnichsen too. There was no evidence of a Billy Barlow in Fort Sumner, NM July 14th 1881. Brushy said that he heard that Pat Garrett in town, so he sent his imaginary friend Billy Barlow to get some meat at Maxwell's porch. He heard gun fire so he went to check it out. He got in a imaginary gun fight with Pat Garrett and his posse. He was shot in the shoulder, jaw and the top of the head. The bullet went a inch and a half back of his forehead and he survived and escaped. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 It's quite apparent that Brushy and Morrisson saw one too many Westerns.

It has been said that Billy and Garret were supposed to be freinds and when The Kid was captured at Stinking Springs and taken away to be judged and hanged, a few days before Garret left on some business which was strange that he didnt send any of his deputies to sort these things out as Billy was a Big outlaw name and i think any other sheriff would of stayed, then all of a sudden Billy finds a gun in the outhouse. I personally think that Garret didnt want his freind to die so he placed a gun for him in the outhouse and so he wouldnt be blamed or be a suspect of this, he left. When The Kid got away but didnt leave south of the border and news got back that Billy was in Fort Sumner, Garret took some men with him to go get the kid ( or at least thats what he wanted his deputies to believe). The night Billy got shot Pat Garret Knew it wasnt Billy but someone had to be taken down and thats why there isnt any death photos of the Kid and after all this Billy Knew that this time he really had to make an exit. All this as a Billy The Kid fan is what i wish had happened and that Billy lived out his life under the name of Brushy Bill Roberts

they might've been acquainted before, but I think claims of them being close friends are an exaggeration. I remember seeing someone present as "evidence" a photo supposedly of them sitting with a group at a wedding, but it was quickly proved a fake. One reason was that Garrett was nearly a foot taller than Billy, but in the picture they're the same height. The version you described was the same one featured in Young Guns II, that Garrett couldn't bring himself to kill his old friend, and just let him go with the promise that Billy would leave and never resurface. I suppose it's plausible, but I've never seen any concrete evidence to back this up. If Billy did survive, I believe it'd be more likely that Garrett killed the wrong man and tried to cover it up with a quick funeral and not letting any next of kin claim or identify the body. Then Billy, seeing this was his perfect way out, disappeared into obscurity.

I feel that the Kid was NOT killed by Garrett, although I think he "got the drop on him" but let Billy jump out a window & escape the compound, because they had discussed this very thing before when they rode together. Garrett wanted to go on some book tours which were pitched to him by several dime-novel publishing houses, where Garrett acquired "Fame & Fortune" merely by SAYING he got the Kid--a formidable Outlaw. This'd be like a has-been prize-fighter saying he had defeated a "Name"-boxer, like Sonny Liston/Muhammad Ali/George Foreman, while they were @ the "Top" of their Game. Un-likely, yes, but if it actually happened, Garrett had some really deadly gun-slinger skills about him. One who "ambushes-another", is always "on the lookout" for another to do that to Him, but Garrett was tragically ambushed while going to look at some property, which he would have been very careful about, had he earlier Really ambushed the Kid.

Here is my 2 bits. For obvious reasons, Brushy Bill Roberts could not in any way be Billy the Kid. Aside from his own family that verified that he was born after Billy´s death, there are also the photos of him in his youth. None of them resemble Billy. If you look at youthful photos of known movie stars and compare them to how they look now, you can easily recognize them despite the passing years. That is not the case with the Brushy Bill character, when comparing his old looks with the photo of Billy the Kid. I do believe he got away and that Garrett shot the wrong man, for 2 reasons: 1. Billy was armed at all times, being on the run and yet the man shot by Garrett only had a knife. Contrary to what you see in westerns, people in general did not own a gun, let alone carry them around, at least not townfolks. Fire arms were quite expensive so a poor mexican certainly could not afford a fire arm, hence the knife. 2. The corpse did not fit the description of Billy, who was known to be clean shaven and of small height. Instead the dead person had a full beard and was taller with a different eye color.

My only thoughts on this, is Billy would have to have had the love of a “pal” for Pat Garret to abandon New Mexico after his supposed death. He could’ve brought personal disaster on Garret by riding through town in front of everyone on his way out of the state!

i believe Billy was told by Pat to leave and never return after he saw Polita who was pregnant with Billy's kid to not bring shame as an heir to the Maxwell legacy. Pat needed a body so a farmhand was shot instead and buried in a hurry. Pat attempted to collect his reward and Billy left the territory for good . Brushy has eyes , scars , ears , height , etc etc .. Apparently the baby passed away and was said to be a girl. Also there is no way Polita would let them shoot Billy.

Billy surviving is a valid thgeory, however he was NOT Brushy Bill. We know this because:

-Brushy Bill did not know which side Billy fought on in the Lincoln County War.
-Brushy was illiterate and knew little Spanish, while Billy was literate and spoke Spanish fluently.
-Brushy claimed that Billy's escape from jail after being sentenced to death was peaceful and withoiut bloodshed , which is not true. Billy killed Deputy Bell and several people witnessed Billy horribly massacre Bob Ollinger with both barrels of his own 10 gauge shotgun.
-Brushy claimed to be left handed, like Billy. This is because the only photgraph of Billy at that time was a picture of him holding his rifle in his left hand, so people assumed him to left handed. It was found out decades after Brushy's death that the photgraph was flipped and Billy was actually holdiung the rifle in his right hand. Historians now belive Billy to have been ambidextrious but used his right as his dominant hand.

Billy surving is a valid theory, but if he did, he most likely escaped to Mexico and disappeared from history altogether.

@insert name here in the initial interview with the historians, he did not know that Billy was with the Regulators. After the interview concluded with the historians coming to agreement that Brushy Bill couldn’t have been The Kid, he changed his story to rectify that and other the discrepancies I mentioned above. Moreover, that does not address the other points I have brought up, the most damning point being his illiteracy and inability to speak or understand Spanish fluently.

I totally agree with your opinion and I even think that when Billy found a gun in The outhouse which he used to shoot one of the deputies keeping him prisoner, that the gun was left there by Garrett himself and my reason for saying and thinking this, is that strangely Pat Garrett had left to go far away to solve some things instead of sending one of his deputies and also both Garrett and Billy had been freinds before and he had a nickname for the kid which was little casino and Billy called him big Casino. Pat Garrett had left the gun and found a way to let Billy know about it plus after Billy had escaped he went to Fort Sumner, Pat Garret knew that Billy felt very at home there as the Mexican people really appreciated the kid and also after hearing rumours in more than one occasion that the kid was around the area he didn't leave straight away as it would of been normal, but in my opinion gave the kid more time for Billy to get away, but cause the rumours didn't stop and Garrett had been paid to do a job he was obligated to go . This is just my opinion and if you think about it, it all makes sense and I think it's not far from the Truth.

Garret had a reward due to him and was a friend of Billy. Bushy Billy wanted a pardon from NM’s governor before his death with no need to so at an old age and as he was basically free. Everyone wanted the kid to remain in the grave regardless as to who was buried there.

Fort Sumner was a very remote small town. Most people did not have cameras back then. It get's real hot in July, Fort Sumner. The last thing Pat Garrett would do is dragged Billy the Kid's rotted corpse around for show and tell.

I did not know about Pat's book, however I actually went to school with a person with a last name of Garrett oddly enough during the time that young guns 1 and 2 were popular during the mid 90's and I asked this kid who was about 15 at the time if he was related to Pat Garrett and he said yes, I later confirmed this; I asked him if Pat killed Billy The Kid and he said that has been a mystery even in his family and he did not know the truth. I actually did research after watching young guns 2 several years ago about Brushy Bill Roberts and I believe that Brushy Bill Roberts was indeed Billy The Kid. Why? Why would anyone claim to be a famous wild west outlaw that many believed to be dead in their 70's or 80's? They did not do it for fame, as anyone who reads upon Billy The Kid, he was not a man trying to be famous for the sake of being famous, he was in fact seeking justice for John Tunstall during his supposed outlaw run. Was he an outlaw? Maybe, who knows, I am not standing up for Billy The Kid and the killings he was involved with, but all of this started when John Tunstall was gunned down for trying to run the same business as Murphy was. This triggered Billy to seek justice; this is why he and his regulators became sworn in as deputies, to bring in those who killed John Tunstall. As the saying goes, "Truth in movies, lies in the media." Should Billy be sentenced for the crimes he has done if he was still alive? That is not for us to decide, we were not there. Why would Brush Roberts want to be pardoned if he was not Billy The Kid?
I believe Brush Roberts was Billy The Kid, he wanted to be pardoned before he died; he wanted to get that on the record before it was too late, a stranger would not do that just for publicity.

Pat shot and killed Charlie Bowdre mistaken him for Billy the Kid because of the hat he was wearing, but he did not pass him off as Billy the Kid. I originally had said that Brushy Bill was illiterate but retracted that statement when I saw evidence that showed he clearly wasn't. Brushy was also shown to be fluent in spanish.

What did Brushy Bill do from the time of Billy the Kid’s “death”? Did he become a farmer like “Old Henry”, the movie? If he was Billy andhe and Pat more or less put him in witness protection, what was his life like? Supposedly Pat and Billy were friends so it would not be surprising for them to fake his death. Also Pat’s book about Billy, filled with falsehoods, could have been a continuation of the coverup. Taking pictures of dead outlaws was a common practice, both for bragging rights and to prove that the nefarious miscreant was no longer a threat. That no picture of a dead Billy was taken and that he was buried in such a way that he would decompose quickly lends creedence to the belief the Pat and Billy faked it. A fun mystery

I believe Brushy Bill. He knew so much about not only the town, but the people, including their correct names that historians had gotten wrong due to typos. The morning after Garrett supposedly killed Billy, Billy's horse, saddle, and his entire kit were gone.

Brushy Bill was terrified that if they did accept that he was actually Billy he would be immediately imprisoned. He and his attorney set up what was supposed to be a private meeting with the governor. But when they arrived, the governor escorted them into a huge room full of press, with State Marshalls lining the wall. Brushy Bill about passed out. He became so weak that they had to carry him out to a room off to the side. Once Brushy Bill had recovered the governor basically said he wasn't going to be a part of the foolishness, and they left. Brushy Bill passed away three weeks later. His attorney felt horrible because he had already conducted many recorded interviews and had questioned Brushy Bill extensively. He would repeat questions later to see if Bill's answers were consistent.

If the deputy’s had retracted their statements then why wasn’t it ever written down on paper and signed,as to describing certain places and buildings it would come down to this brushy bloke also being there at the same time but not necessarily when was there, he could have been there two years after billy and knowing where and what to look for but no one will ever know unless time Tavel happens

However Brushy Bill's account is FAR more accurate than the book. He remembered details that were only in military documents. I'm from Glencoe and Mescalero NM via my father's family, my mother's family is from Ft Sumner / Puerto De Luna. Still have family living and buried in Ft Sumner. I won't elaborate any further. But I will say this..
There ain't no way in hell that Brushy Bill was William Bonney.

My great great uncle was Sheriff in Lincoln county at that time. The story goes that Pat Garrett but let him go . The body they claimed was billy was not known because it was not recognized due to how that person really died.

According to Morrisson Brushy had more than the exact same scars in the exact same location as Billy the Kid. Brushy had 26 knife and bullet scars on his body. That means Brushy was stabbed and shot 26 times and lived to tell the tall tale.

Young Guns 2 was based on Brushy Bill's false claims. Great movie (I had the biggest crush on Lou Diamond Phillips), but not true at all. Even the first Young Guns movie was a blend of fact and fiction. It has been proven more than one that Brushy Bill was NOT Billy the Kid

There was a whole lot more that Brushy Bill knew about the movements of Billy, who he knew, and the Lincoln County War. If he wasn't telling the truth, he must have been riding with Billy throughout his short time in the Lincoln County area.

Chuck Foertmeyer Don't believe in the mumbo jumbo bullshit hype. Brushy did not have special knowledge of Billy the Kid that nobody else knew thus Brushy was there and is Billy the Kid. His knowledge of Billy the Kid was average at best. He did not know the first man killed by Billy. He said in his last escape from the court house jail he did not kill anybody he just got on his horse and rode off.

@attilathehun0 Billy was sentenced to hang for the murder of Sheriff Brady. During his escape from the courthouse he killed Olinger and Bell. If his hope was to be given a pardon by the governor, why would he admit to killing Olinger and Bell. There is no statute of limitations for murder. He'd have been a fool to admit to that. If you are referring to his apparent lack of knowledge when he appeared before the governor, remember that he was rattled by the presence of law enforcement and reporters who were not supposed to be there. It's hard enough for an old man to remember details under normal conditions, let alone having been lied to about his "private meeting" with the governor. Remember also, he was still sentenced to hang. If he had been lied to about the meeting, maybe he believed he had been lied to about the possibility of a pardon.

@Chuck Foertmeyer So you are just providing me a excuse why Brushy bombed when he saw the governor.🤣🤣 The real Billy the Kid was not scared of law enforcement. Billy was involved in 4-5 killings of Sherrif and deputies.

I mean his scars matched his face was a 93% match and when he talked to still living friends of Billy he would say stuff only billy would know and the fact he was illiterate and couldn't read or write and still knew stuff out of the book I'm sure it really was him Billy the kid

Henry McCarthy, William H Boney to Billy the Kid, and now Bushy Bill. It’s all a Robin Hood Story. Personally, I don’t believe it. The kid got shot. I have looked at the famous tin photo of the Kid many times, and I don’t see a resemblance at all. The jaw line and nose are completely different.

Also if you look close Billy's underneath the color of his eyes there is white... like Lauren Bacall's used to be when he had his eyes open you can actually see white under there...Brushy bill in his early picture you can't see any white at all under his colored part of his eyes
