Great explanation Mitch.
I have a lot more saws than I need because I got hooked on sharpening them. Just a little effort and some practice makes all the difference.

Cheers Dave. Most of my Western saws have been inherited, so I have a certain attachment to them. It surprises me that so many people discard old blunt saws, but I guess that's good for the saw industry

Nice video, Mitch.
You explained and showed it great! 👍🏻
The flat file that you clamped in the block of wood. For this I have a device from Veritas, which is made of aluminum and is also used to sharpen scrapers.
Well you took a normal triangular file. In exceptional cases, you can use them because the triangular saw file has a sharp edge at the tips. This is done so that the tooth base is slightly rounded and therefore cannot tear so quickly. What can happen with a normal triangular file.

Cheers Gunter,
I'm slowly moving over to 'proper' saw files, although the files I have were only ever used for saws and have lasted really well. For years I had no idea there was any difference.

Hello Mitch,
Thanks for the answer.
I didn't have that before either.
How was that "You are capable of learning". 😂

I've had a quick go at a couple but haven't reset the teeth. Thanks for sharing your expertise

Glad to help Robert. I like to encourage all tool maintenance, but sharpening has the quickest pay-back in performance
