Lazy River
Roberta Sherwood Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Up a lazy river
By the old mill run
There's a lazy river
In the noon day's sun
Lingering in the shade
Of a kind old tree

Throw away your troubles
And dream a dream of me
Oh, up a lazy river
Where the robin's song
Greets a bright new mornin'
We get along, get along

Blue skies up above
Everyone's in love
Up a lazy river
How happy we will be
Up a lazy river with me

[Repeat all]

Overall Meaning

The song "Lazy River" by Roberta Sherwood tells the story of a peaceful day spent by a river. The lyrics describe the relaxing atmosphere of being by the water, under the shade of a tree, and away from the stresses of everyday life. By urging the listener to "throw away your troubles," the song suggests that spending time in nature can be a way to find peace and contentment. The melody and rhythm of the song also contribute to its laid-back mood, with a lilting beat and a leisurely pace that make it easy to imagine oneself drifting along on a lazy river.

The lyrics also reference the songs of birds and the bright morning sky, emphasizing the beauty and tranquility of the natural world. The final lines of the song - "Blue skies up above, everyone's in love, up a lazy river, how happy we will be, up a lazy river with me" - suggest that the song is not only about finding inner peace, but also about sharing that peace with someone else. By inviting a companion to join her on the lazy river, Roberta Sherwood suggests that spending time in nature can be a way to connect with others and deepen our relationships.

WOW! Just saw her on a classic Donna Reed Show. Never heard of her, but felt she was someone special, so I googled her. She sure was special! Wonderful talent! I'll search out more of her songs. Thanks for sharing...

My pleasure. This was the only current record of hers that I ever heard with any regularity on the radio -- yes, I'm that old! -- and though I wasn't a watcher of the Donna Reed show (working evenings at the time), I did see her in an acting role for the first time many years later in a TV showing of the 1963 movie "The Courtship Of Eddie's Father," which was her only theatrical film appearance.

Same here. I'm a vintage sitcom nerd. Would've made a heck of show. My guess is ABC didn't think the music gimmick would've worked. (We had the Patridge Family later... probably ahead of its time). Hard to compete with the CBS sitcom juggernaut.

Fabulous! What a singer! No one like her!
