For All We Know
Robin McKelle Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
We may never meet again
Before you go
Make this moment sweet again
We won't say goodnight
Until the last minute
I'll hold out my hand
And my heart will be in it
This may only be a dream
We come and we go
Like the ripple on a stream
So love me, love me tonight
Tomorrow was made for some
Tomorrow may never come
For all we know, we know
So love me, love me tonight
Tomorrow was made for some
Tomorrow may never come
For all we know, we know
The lyrics to Robin McKelle's song, For All We Know, are filled with poignant sentiments about the fleeting nature of life and love. The first two lines of the song emphasize the fact that we may never see someone again and thus we should make the most of every moment. The idea of carpe diem is further emphasized by the line "Make this moment sweet again". The singer of the song wants to savor every last moment with their loved one and not say goodnight until the last minute. This sentiment of holding on to the present moment and not worrying too much about the future is further reiterated in the line "For all we know, this may only be a dream."
The next stanza of the song discusses the ephemerality of life itself, and the comparison of human life to the ripple on a stream is apt. The singer asks their lover to love them tonight, as tomorrow is unpredictable and may never come. This line is especially gut-wrenching as it reminds us of the fragility of our existence and the importance of cherishing the people we love. The final repetition of the line "For all we know, we know" is a reminder that of all the things we do not know and cannot predict, one thing we know for sure is the love we feel for the people in our lives.
