Daydream
Robin Trower & Michael Schenker Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We were laughing in a daydream
With the world beneath our feet

And the sun shined on the water
Where the skies and the ocean meet

We were spellbound
Ohh spellbound

We were listning down a rainbow
As the leaves fell to the ground

Whipering as we tumbled
And the wind laft at the sound

We were spellbound
Ohh spellbound

We were spellbound
Ohh spellbound

We were children in the garden
Where the flowers kiss the sky

And the birds sang out and wonder
As the day went sailing by

We were spellbound
Spellbound
Ohh spellbound

Spellbound
Ohh

Overall Meaning

"Daydream" by Robin Trower is an ode to youthful innocence and the power of perception. The opening lines set the tone of the song: "We were laughing in a daydream / With the world beneath our feet." The atmosphere is light, playful and full of wonder. The imagery of "the sun shined on the water / Where the skies and the ocean meet" conjures a dreamy, ethereal quality, which is further sustained by the use of the word "spellbound" throughout the song. It implies a sort of enchantment or magic that permeates the experience.

The song’s themes are tied to feelings of escapism and being free from the constraints of real life, where the listeners - the singer, and the person they are talking to - are transported to a blissful, imaginary world. Through the lines "We were listening down a rainbow / As the leaves fell to the ground," the listener can picture themselves in a place where anything is possible, where even the laws of physics don't apply, and they have the ability to defy reality itself.

The lyrics are accompanied by a catchy blues-rock riff, which further emphasizes the joyous, carefree nature of the song. It's a perfect match for the playful sentiment of the lyrics. Each element of the song comes together to create an atmosphere of pure, unadulterated happiness.

This, to me, is one of the greatest tune ever.  We all got that handful that do us right, this is one of mine.  Few have mastered feedback like Robin.

Bearwolf Ex Right there with you, hombre. This is the very best version of this song that I’ve found, still, and yet it remains on my desert island Top Ten. Masterfully executed by a wholly present Trower. Saw him play this song in Anaheim in the mid seventies, but I remember it being a rather ho-hum, sorta phoned-in rendition. There is real emotion in his playing here, and it never fails to move me.

IAM2112

A master guitarist, full of feeling, and realizes that sometimes less is more.  Great song.

Saw this vinyl album in a newsstand rack I was working at, didn't know the guy, I was 14, but the cover looked cool. I saw he had a guitar in front of a lot people in a stadium and figured how bad could he be. As soon as that needle hit the record I was blown away, taken on a journey and that TONE. Very underrated genius.
