Anytime You Like
Robyn Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's like you're waiting for me to start
There's no right moment to break my heart
Boy, you can tell me anytime you like

We could talk any day of the week
I cry myself to sleep in my pink silk sheets
Boy, you can tell me anytime you like
Boy, you can tell me anytime you like

Under pressure
Alright
Under pressure
You and I
Under pressure
I was uptight
Under pressure, yeah

I keep quiet and hope you forget
You know that kitchen table, let's buy it
Boy, you can tell me anytime you like
Anytime

If I was brave I wouldn't keep my mouth shut
I'm selfish, I don't wanna give you up
Boy, you can tell me anytime you like x2

Under pressure
Alright
Under pressure
You and I
Under pressure
Love is uptight
Under pressure
Yeah
Under pressure, yeah

Under pressure
Alright
Under pressure
You and I
Under pressure
This love is uptight
Under pressure
Yeah

Hey baby
How'you doing?
How was you day?
What'you do?
I said I love you
Yeah?
What'you thinking about? x2
Tell me what's on your mind
Won't you tell me what's on your mind?
I love you so much

Boy, you can tell me
Boy, you can tell me anytime you like

She implies that her lover is waiting for the right moment to break her heart, and she is ready to hear it anytime he likes. In the second verse, she talks about how she cries herself to sleep in her pink silk sheets, conveying a sense of vulnerability and emotional turmoil. She reassures her lover that he can tell her anything anytime he likes, emphasizing that she is there for him.

The chorus talks about being under pressure, both from internal and external forces, and how it affects love. The singer acknowledges that she keeps quiet, hoping her lover will forget and move on. However, she suggests that they buy a kitchen table together, indicating a desire to build a future with him. In the second verse, she admits to being selfish and not wanting to give him up, adding a layer of complexity to their relationship. That spoken part in the breakdown is the most heart-wrenching thing I've ever heard in a pop song. There's even a little breath of exasperation when the breakdown begins, as if the person she's addressing just entered the room. Robyn has a unique skill of story-telling not unlike what an accomplished actor would bring - probably thanks to her actor/director parents. You are instantly placed in that heartbreaking situation when listening. This is truly a remarkable piece of art.

This is one of the most gracious songs I've ever heard from any musician and or song writer. I was in awe when I heard this song. I'd like to tell you again and again what it's like to listen to your music. I'm sure that what ever you write in your next album would be like the rest of your career. I'm going to try to find you in the record store or some sort of mega market. I'd like to find you off the clock of the ever lasting internet beast.I'm going to be short, why can't I stop.
