Glass
Robyn Hitchcock & The Egyptian Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Glass is all we're really made of, and
Glass is all we'll ever be.
Nothing there to be afraid of;
We're both transparent, can't you see?

Glass is rising all around us;
It shines and shines into the air.
When somebody thinks they've found us,
Turn sideways on and disappear.

Glass protects you, but glass can shatter.
Hear the sirens, hear the screams.

In the end, though, nothing matters 'cause
No one else can see your dreams.

Overall Meaning

The song Glass by Robyn Hitchcock & The Egyptians highlights the idea that human beings are fragile beings just like glass. The lyrics imply that life is transient and nothing really matters in the end. The repetitive use of the word "glass" emphasizes the fragility of life and the realization that we are all vulnerable beings. The artwork of the music video complements the lyrics, as it depicts people dancing through broken glass and mirrors, symbolizing the idea that life is full of sharp edges, and we are exposed to risks and dangers every day.

On some songs, Robyn sounds like an ideal substitute for Syd Barrett. On this song, he's David Bowie. Hitchcock is quite inventive because despite sounding at times like others he is original and creative in his own approach. Always enjoyed his music. It wasn't punk, it wasn't new wave. It was progressive-folk-pop-rock I guess.
