Valerie
Rocking Chairs Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's been such a long, long time
Since you went out on your own
Just a lonely girl out in this world
Trying to make it all alone

You're wondering how you feel so down
You can find no peace of mind
If it's heart and soul
That's what you need
Well baby, you got mine

We better run away from this place
And leave it all behind
Driving right out of the night

Valerie, I'll be with you
In the place where lovers meet
Valerie, I don't want to lose
The race down Romance Street
I will be with you, I will run to you

Down the boardwalk I see you walkin'
Looking for a shelter from the rain

I call your name, you look at me
And here we are, together again

Overall Meaning

The song Valerie by Rocking Chairs tells the story of a lonely girl who ventures out into the world to make a name for herself. Despite being on her own, she struggles to find peace of mind and happiness. The lyrics speak of heart and soul, which is what she needs to find and it just so happens her baby already has that for her. The singer, Valerie, has been alone for a long time, but Providence seems to be on her side as she meets her lover, who is willing to take her away from this place of loneliness and leave everything behind.

The lyrics from the song paint a vivid image of two people running away from their problems and being together, away from all their worries. They promise each other to be together and not lose the race down Romance Street. The song does an excellent job of capturing the emotions of hopelessness and loneliness and contrastively shifting the mood to that of love and hope.
