always wondered why everyone in the opening credits seemed to hate him? He never did anyone wrong and was a nice guy who kept to himself. People are assholes and I think this cartoon was a warning of what to expect in real life when we later grew up and became adults.

I love this show. It represents everything about the 90's that made that decade such a unique time: the skewed artwork, subversive humor, social commentary....and that off-beat alternative rock intro. After watching this again I find myself thinking of how distant and out-of-step this would be in today's world of slick, ironic, epileptic sugar rush cartoons.

One of the things I loved about this show was the core references to life. First you are born, then time hits you hard, and sooner than you know it you become a kid and go through a painful childhood. Then get knowledge crammed into your head from the schools and teachers brainwashing you into thinking into a political way then graduate and get thrown into the real world where everyone is out to get you. The show is a reflection to how the real world is, portrayed in a raunchy kinder kid friendly way.

That's partially because my mom didn't like me watching it at the time it was on (it premiered the year I was born, so I kinda get it), but I also felt Ren & Stimpy was a little too one-note and too chaotic. Rocko was definetly tamer, but I also thought it was more cerebral, and even kind of progressive in that it was an animated series depicting quarter-life crisis, something you almost never see. Ren & Stimpy was an awesome Bob Clampett throwback, but that meant the novelty died out a little too quickly imo.

The thing about this cartoon is that you can look at it from two different perspectives. That was the main reason why this show was a classic. You could look at it at a cartoony way, the animation, goofy characters, the amusement, kid entertainment. If you are a adult, or an older teenager at this point in time, then you can look at it the way as risque humor, masked underneath the cartoon visuals, and real life situations represented in a bastardized way. That's why this show worked so well.

This intro was actually used for reruns of the first season from the mid-90s onward. Originally, the first season's intro had a bunch of orange CGI objects with the "NICKELODEON" lettering fly into the screen at 0:43 and then back out to reveal the show's logo on the TV that Rocko and Spunky run into. Some episodes on DVD do retain that original version of the first season intro, and it also unusually shows up on Season 4's "Wimp on the Barby/Yarnbenders" in place of the Season 2 to 4 intro.

Considering Stephen wrote on this show, and Tom Kenny did some voices, this is practically the predecessor to SpongeBob. And it really shows when you look at Stephens visions for the show compared to this, it’s pretty clear lots of inspiration came from here.

Technically, this is the later Season 1 theme... the version that came before it had no high-pitched voices in the chorus, and a less pronounced drum track, among other things.
