Formed around the partnership of Lowe with Edmunds, the two musicians inspired by melodic 50s and 60s rock n roll, the band took its name from the title of a 1972 album by Edmunds. Rockpile was primarily known as a backup group to those two artists' solo projects. However, the band did release one official album, titled 'Seconds of Pleasure' in 1980, which spawned the minor hit "Teacher Teacher" while also receiving strong critical praise. In August of that year, the guys played the noted Heatwave festival near Toronto, and the group additionally made their only American television appearance on the ABC variety program 'Fridays'. The band broke up in 1981.

The way my broken heart is hurting me
I've got my pride and I know how to hide
All the sorrow and pain
I'll do my crying in the rain
If I wait for cloudy skies
You won't know the rain from the tears in my eyes
So though the heartaches remain
I'll do my crying in the rain
Raindrops falling from heaven
Will never wash away my misery
But since we're not together
I'll wait for stormy weather
To hide these tears I hope you'll never see
Someday when my crying's done
I'm gonna wear a smile and walk in the sun
I may be a fool
But till then, darling, you'll never see me complain
I'll do my crying in the rain
I'll do my crying in the rain
I'll do my crying in the rain
I'll do my crying in the rain
The lyrics of Rockpile's "Crying in the Rain" tell a story of heartbreak and pain. The singer is attempting to hide the sadness of their broken heart from the world, specifically from the person who caused them such heartache. They are determined to maintain their pride and dignity by keeping their true feelings hidden. The line "I'll do my crying in the rain" is a powerful metaphor for the singer's emotional state. They are saying that they will not let anyone see them cry and instead will let the tears fall invisibly in the rain.
The singer's heartache is compounded by the fact that their love for the other person has not faded. The lines "You'll never know that I still love you / So though the heartaches remain" are testament to this. The singer is saying that despite the pain that their love has caused them, they still feel the same way about the other person. The idea that raindrops falling from heaven will not wash away the misery reinforces this sense of hopelessness - the singer is resigned to feeling this way until their tears are washed away by a storm of emotion.
The final lines bring the song to a hopeful ending, as the singer declares that someday they will be able to smile again and walk in the sun. However, until that day comes, they will continue to hide their pain and "do their crying in the rain".
