Only The Rain
Rod Argent & Colin Blunstone Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

From rafters of memory
And deep grim lodges
Housed in siblings' far off game chambers
Comes the rain, oh Lord
And it reflects my tears, which originally grew in mirrors
Oh windows of illusion

And the rain fell, like ball bearings on a roulette wheel
Eliminating the future
And I saw ghosts, they were children
Running through a cedar boulevard
Into a wood
They came to a gate and looked inside
It was raining
And they heard a soft moaning, warm and plural

And the rain fell, on the lake, in the vast garden
Faster and faster
It was dark
Suddenly children were everywhere
Gliding along the lake, running through the trees
The stars arranged themselves like an illuminated skipping rope
The trees were rich and high, and mingled with the stars
As jewels complement skin

Come, jump across the lake
Into he branches
Higher than the clouds

Let the rain fall
From secret passageways
And oak casements come these spirits
Out of their sleepy silver webs
They play with the forgotten animals at night
And patter on our windows when we sleep

Only the rain has such soft fingers
Only the rain

Overall Meaning

In "Only The Rain", Rod Argent and Colin Blunstone capture the essence of a melancholic daydream in their poetically vivid lyrics. The song is a meditation on memory, illusion, and the transformative power of rain. The opening lines, "From rafters of memory, and deep grim lodges, housed in siblings' far off game chambers", conjure a sense of the past as a shadowy repository of experiences and emotions. The rain, which reflects the singer's tears, is both a metaphor for the cleansing and purifying aspect of nature and a symbol of the fleeting nature of existence.

As the song progresses, the rain becomes a catalyst for a surreal journey through memory and imagination. The line "And the rain fell, like ball bearings on a roulette wheel, eliminating the future" suggests that the singer is being transported to a different time and place, where he sees ghosts of children running through a cedar boulevard into a wood. The gentle moaning he hears from within the gate hints at something mysterious and enigmatic, which unfolds as he observes the children gliding along the lake and running through the trees.

In the final stanza, the singer is invited to join the children and jump across the lake into the branches, where he can find solace and transcendence. The image of the stars arranging themselves like an illuminated skipping rope suggests a playful and innocent mood, while the trees being mingled with the stars evoke a sense of harmony and integration. The rain, which falls from secret passageways and oak casements, brings with it spirits that "play with the forgotten animals at night and patter on our windows when we sleep". The song ends on a note of serene acceptance, where only the rain has such soft fingers.

Autumn Blue

This is the most beautiful ballad they have ever recorded recently. Jazz fan that I am, this resonates strongly with me. So stunning. Thank you for posting this at last, because I have a special friend on fb who MUST hear this.

Modes9

The only "negative" comment I have about the reformed Zombies is that there are probably too many ballads. One of the reasons I prefer Argent, (the band), is that there were also great rockers like Tragedy and Thunder and Lightning.

Autumn Blue

+Modes9 You mean to say this song doesn't move you in the least? Pity.

Autumn Blue

Don't forget straight ahead great rockers like "Rosie!"
