Father & Son
Rod Stewart Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's not time to make a change, just relax, take it easy
You're still young, that's your fault, there's so much you have to know
Find a girl, settle down, if you want you can marry
Look at me, I am old but I'm happy

I was once like you are now and I know that it's not easy
To be calm when you've found something going on
But take your time, think a lot, why think of everything you've got
For you will still be here tomorrow but your dreams may not

How can I try to explain, when I do he turns away again
It's always been the same, same old story
From the moment I could talk I was ordered to listen
Now there's a way and I know that I have to go away, I know I have to go

It's not time to make a change, just sit down, take it slowly
You're still young, that's your fault, there's so much you have to go through
Find a girl, settle down, if you want you can marry
Look at me, I am old but I'm happy

All the times that I cried, keeping all the things I knew inside
It's hard but it's harder to ignore it

If they were right, I'd agree but it's them they know not me
Now there's a way and I know that I have to go away, I know I have to go

Overall Meaning

The song "Father & Son" by the British musician Rod Stewart is a poignant conversation between a father and his son. The father offers advice to his son, telling him to take things easy, find a girl, settle down, and get married. He acknowledges that he once felt the same as his son does now, but warns him that it's not easy to stay calm when something is happening around you. The father encourages his son to take his time and think through the decisions he has to make. He reminds his son that while he will still be here tomorrow, his dreams may not, so he should cherish every moment.

The son, on the other hand, feels like he's always been ordered to listen and is frustrated that his father doesn't understand him. He's been keeping his emotions and thoughts locked inside, finding it harder and harder to ignore them. He feels like if people judged him based on what they know about him, then they would agree with his father, but they don't really know him.

The song presents a universal theme of the difficulties in communication between different generations. Each has their own perspective and priorities, making it hard to see the world from another's point of view. The father is trying to protect his son, whereas the son wants the freedom to follow his own path, no matter how difficult it may be.

Played at my Dad's grave by my only brother during first anniversary of our Dads death(mum and 2 sisters). Just had 2 year pass by and still feel the heartache that he 'had to go away' from the final words of this song. He, Dad, would have expressed the same words about having to leave my mum as a widow for the remainder of her lifešŸ˜¢ I just reached my 60th birthday and knew him for 58 years of my life, I can't live without him, but some how I do! 2 years ago I had him and it changes everything.
