The pair wrote nine musicals together and collaborated on a musical film, State Fair. As producers, they also brought Irving Berlin's Annie Get Your Gun to the stage [1], leaving an indelible mark on American musical theater and a legacy of successes that has never been equaled. Their joint efforts continued over a twenty-year period, until Hammerstein's death in 1960.
Some Enchanted Evening

You may see a stranger across a crowded room
And somehow you know, you'll know even then
That somewhere you'll see her again and again
Some enchanted evening, someone may be laughing
You may hear her laughing across a crowded room
And night after night, as strange as it seems
Who can explain it, who can tell you why?
Fools give you reasons, wise men never try
Some enchanted evening, when you find your true love
When you hear her call you across a crowded room
Then fly to her side and make her your own
Or all through your life, you may dream all alone
Once you have found her, never let her go
Once you have found her, never let her go
The song "Some Enchanted Evening" is a beautiful romantic ballad that describes the magical feeling of falling in love at first sight. The lyrics describe a scene in which someone is in a crowded room and sees a stranger that catches their attention. Without even speaking to them, they have a feeling that they will see this person again and again. The song then shifts to talk about laughter and how it can be even more captivating than physical appearances. Someone's laugh can stick in your mind, haunting you in your dreams, and making you yearn to see them again.
The chorus repeats the phrase "enchanted evening" as if to emphasize the extraordinary and almost otherworldly nature of this experience. The lyrics then pose a rhetorical question: "Who can explain it, who can tell you why? Fools give you reasons, wise men never try." This line seems to suggest that love is a mysterious and unexplainable emotion, not to be overanalyzed or rationalized.
The final stanza serves as a call to action, encouraging the listener to seize the opportunity if they ever find their true love. Rather than dreaming of what might have been, one should take the risk and make a move towards love. The last line of the song is repeated twice for emphasis - "Once you have found her, never let her go." This powerful statement reminds us of the preciousness of true love and the importance of fully embracing it when it comes our way.

Was a caretaker for my mom who died at 100. In her last year her mind started to drift but an old musical like this would come on TCM she would perk up and remember all the lyrics. Arthritis meant she could no longer play them on the piano like when we were kids but she loved to sing along. We lived in Chicago but every year in October for their anniversary dad arranged to be in NYC on business and they would take in a show or two so she remembered seeing them on stage as well as in the movies and would come to life

So beautiful and deeply touching and a reminder of how things used to be and should be still. I used to hear these songs on my aunt’s radio when I was a small boy and they have never left me. I was blessed to have experienced all this and at that age when you absorb so much and your imagination is at its most vivid.
