I Ain't Living Long Like This
Rodney Crowell Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I look for trouble and I found it son
Straight down the barrel of a lawman's gun
I tried to run but I don't think I can
You make one move and you're a dead man friend
Ain't living long like this
Can't live at all like this, can I baby?

He slipped the handcuffs on behind my back
And left me reeling on a steel reel rack
They got'em all in the jailhouse baby
Ain't living long like this
Can't live at all like this, can I baby?

Grew up in Houston off the wayside drives
Son of a carhop and some all night dives
Dad drove a stock car to an early death
All I remember was a drunk man's breath
Ain't living long like this
Can't live at all like this, can I baby?

You know the story how the wheel goes 'round
Don't let them take you to the man down town
Can't sleep at all in a jailhouse baby
Ain't living long like this
Can't live at all like this, can I baby?

I live with Angel she's a roadhouse queen
Makes Texas Ruby look like Sandra Dee
I want to love her but I don't know how
I'm at the bottom in the jailhouse now
Ain't living long like this
Can't live at all like this, can I baby?

You know the story about the jailhouse rock
Go on and do it but just don't get caught
They got'em all in the jailhouse baby

Ain't living long like this
Can't live at all like this, can I baby?

Overall Meaning

In "I Ain't Living Long Like This," Rodney Crowell tells the story of a troublemaker who is caught by the law and sent to jail. The lyrics vividly describe the scenario, as the singer looks for trouble and is met with a lawman pointing a gun at him. He tries to run, but is quickly caught and handcuffed. The song also gives a glimpse into the character's background - he grew up in Houston with a father who died young due to drinking, and his current partner is a "roadhouse queen" named Angel.

The repeated phrase "Ain't living long like this, can't live at all like this" suggests that the singer is aware of the dangerous path he is on, and that he knows that his actions could lead to his demise. It also shows a sense of resignation - he knows that he may not have long left to live if he continues down this path.

The line "You know the story how the wheel goes 'round, don't let them take you to the man down town" suggests that the singer is aware of the cyclical nature of life and that his current situation is a result of his past actions catching up with him. It also perhaps hints at a sense of rebellion against authority and a desire to not get caught and punished for his actions.

Overall, "I Ain't Living Long Like This" is a gritty and evocative portrayal of a character caught up in a dangerous and unstable lifestyle.

Rodney wrote so much great stuff. Covered by so many legends in their own right😊

Larry Lake

Others do cover this song well but this is the REAL DEAL! The words ring just a little bit truer out'a Rodney's mouth! Fantastic song.

Dave Streatfield

Thanks for posting this masterpiece ! Agree with Larry - there are some great versions of this song out there , but it's Rodney's song and as good as it gets ! Had the privilege of meeting Rodney over here in England 2 or 3 times , and hopefully we'll get him back again at some point ! Good wishes !

Rodney Crowell has meant so much to so many performers. Genius among us.

Tracy Kingston

Was one of the members of Emmy Lou Harris' "Hot band. Check him out on C'est La Vie
in the early days. The Waylon Jenning's version is the only one I remember being played on the radio.

Charlene Kelly

Ed Webbley

It's silly that others prefer other covers. Its' his song.and has always been its master.

J Dubbiyou

Rodney has been in bands with both Albert Lee and Vince Gill. They both cover this song and no doubt have performed it many times with Crowell who is one of America's great songwriters
