Love That Never Dies
Roger McGuinn Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Something happens to me every time when we touch
Sometimes I'm worried, 'cause I think I might love you too much
Yeah, I know what your mama said and maybe she's right
But can't you feel what my heart is saying tonight

For a woman like you, life's an opening door
You're the beautiful girl that we're all looking for
Yeah, you can have anything, anything that you want
But, baby, what we've already got can never be bought

If our love is a timeless flight
Well, you know that's alright
'Cause we're gonna take our time loving tonight

I'm gonna hold you right here in my arms
As the Limousine takes us away
And we'll dream about the music of some brighter day

Throw a dime to the tambourine man
And kiss all the horses goodbye
And believe in the spirit of a love that never dies

Yeah, you can have anything, anything that you want
But, baby, what we've already got can never be bought

If our love is a timeless flight
Well, you know that's alright
'Cause we're gonna take our time loving tonight

I'm gonna hold you right here in my arms
As the Limousine takes us away
And we'll dream about the music of some brighter day

Throw a dime to the tambourine man
And kiss all the horses goodbye
And believe in the spirit of a love that never dies

I'm gonna hold you right here in my arms
As the Limousine takes us away
And we'll dream about the music of some brighter day

Throw a dime to the tambourine man
And kiss all the horses goodbye
And believe in the spirit of a love that never dies

I'm gonna hold you right here in my arms

As the Limousine takes us away
And we'll dream about the music of some brighter day

Overall Meaning

In "Love That Never Dies", Roger McGuinn sings about the uncertainty and depth of his feelings for someone. He describes a fear of loving too much, despite the knowledge that they have something special that cannot be bought. McGuinn acknowledges that societal expectations and judgments may be conflicting, but the heart's desires cannot be ignored. He recognizes his partner's worth and beauty, and how life is an opportunity for her to seize. McGuinn imagines a serene future with his partner, away from the noise of the world, where they can dream and be together.

The tambourine man mentioned in the song refers to Bob Dylan's character from the song "Mr. Tambourine Man," a popular and influential song of the same era. The song's lyrics touch on themes of freedom, love, and peace, which were prominent in the counterculture movement of the 1960s. The lyrics' dreamy and romantic nature, along with the use of a limousine and horses, adds an element of fairy tale-like escapism. Overall, "Love That Never Dies" is a declaration of love that defies societal norms and speaks to the timeless desire for human connection.

Now, I need a little clarification on this.

I figured the progression to this very quickly, I just heard the chords in my head.

So, I goggled it just to get the fix on it, and I was surprised to see Stan Lynch's name affiliated with McGuinn on da' writing of this.

Well, isn't Lynch a 'Heartbreaker?

The year might, but the collaboration wouldn't surprise me.

Holy shmit...Dempster...!

So, it was a live, 'NEW show, in Electric Ladyland Studio, Hendrix's studio?

And you're there with The Headlights from Tampa Bay?

WTF...?!

But maybe not too weird because McGuinn lives in the Tampa area, yes?

And you already knew him because of this, and he knew you because he'd seen The Headlights locally.

Did you play any Byrds tunes; Lover of the Bayou comes to mind.

And did anybody order pizza?!

I would have; a scrumptious Pepperoni laced wheel of a NYC 'pie!

...or a juicy, slurpy, toasted Rye' Pastrami Reuben!

You shoulda' called me; I was across the 'River, with my Fenders, Gibsons, and amps', in Wayne, N.J.
