Wild Mountain Thyme
Roger McGuinn Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And the trees are sweetly bloomin'
And the wild mountain thyme
Grows among the bloomin' heather
Will you go? Lassie, go?
And we'll all go together
To pick wild mountain thyme
Will you go? Lassie, go?
I will build my love a bower
By yon pure and crystal fountain
Yes and on it I will lay
All the flowers of the mountain
Will you go? Lassie, go?
And we'll go together
To pick wild mountain thyme
All among the bloomin' heather
Will you go? Lassie, go?
If my true love won't come with me
I would surely find another
To pick wild mountain thyme
All among the bloomin' heather
Will you go? Lassie, go?
And we'll all go together
To pick wild mountain thyme
All around the purple heather
Will you go?
Will you go?
Lassie will you go?
The lyrics of Roger McGuinn's "Wild Mountain Thyme" speaks of the coming of summertime, and the beauty of nature that comes with it. The blooming trees and wild mountain thyme growing amongst the blooming heather symbolize the beauty of nature that's hard to resist. The repeated question of "Will you go? Lassie, go?" is a call to someone to come along and enjoy the beauty of nature's offerings with the singer.
The song's chorus "And we'll all go together, to pick wild mountain thyme, all among the bloomin' heather" is a call for community and togetherness. It suggests an invitation to share in the joyful experience of picking flowers and enjoying the scenery as a group. The singer says that if their true love won't join them, they would find another to go with. This line reflects the idea of not waiting for someone and going ahead to enjoy nature's offerings with whoever is available at the moment.

The first time I ever saw either Richard or Roger, they played together and this was one of the songs they did. Magical. My girlfriend and I drove from Seattle to Portland the next night just to see them again. I have seen both many times since, but this holds a unique and wonderful place in my memory.

You know, when you have a song this good, and two musicians this good, whose voices blend so perfectly, it doesn’t matter what the arrangement or instrumentation is. No matter how they choose to do it, it’s going to come out superb, magical, captivating... sublime. If you doubt the truth of that, just press “PLAY”. 😎
