Old Friends
Roger Taylor Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When the sun got big, and the night came down,
We used to share a drink - and let the demons out.
We let the good times rock, you made the bad times roll
We used to laugh a lot, you had a lot of soul.

Old friends in better times.

And when the going got hard,
When times were tough.
We put our backs to the wall,
You used to strut your stuff.
With a head held high, and a heart so big,
One fist at the sky and shake a leg.

Old friends in better times

(Even though, even though we miss you now
Look forward don't look back
We'll get by somehow)

And so I raise my glass in a last goodbye!
Sleep in peace old friend, for me you'll never die.
The best thing I can say, after all this time, is
You were a real friend, of mine.

Old friends in better times.

Overall Meaning

The song Old Friends by Roger Taylor is an emotional ode to a departed friend. The lyrics speak of the good and bad times shared with this friend, and the camaraderie and joy that came along with their company. The opening lines "When the sun got big, and the night came down, We used to share a drink - and let the demons out" depict the moments of letting go of one's inhibitions and enjoying the company of a good friend. The following lines "We let the good times rock, you made the bad times roll, We used to laugh a lot, you had a lot of soul" reminisce the moments of laughter and soulful conversations shared with this friend.

The next few lines describe how the friend stood by the singer during tough times with their backs against the wall. The lines "With a head held high, and a heart so big, One fist at the sky and shake a leg" bring out the image of a strong and supportive friend who always knew how to lift up their spirits. The final goodbye is emotional and heartfelt as the singer raises a glass to the departed friend and says "Sleep in peace old friend, for me you'll never die. The best thing I can say, after all this time, is You were a real friend, of mine." The song is a tribute to the deep bonds of friendship that last beyond time and space.

No wonder.
A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall (cover of Bob Dylan)

Oh, where have you been, my blue-eyed son?
Oh, where have you been, my darling young one?
I’ve stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains
I’ve walked and I’ve crawled on six crooked highways
I’ve stepped in the middle of seven sad forests
I’ve been out in front of a dozen dead oceans
I’ve been ten thousand miles in the mouth of a graveyard
And it’s a hard, and it’s a hard, it’s a hard, and it’s a hard
And it’s a hard rain’s a-gonna fall

Oh, what did you see, my blue-eyed son?
Oh, what did you see, my darling young one?
I saw a newborn baby with wild wolves all around it
I saw a highway of diamonds with nobody on it
I saw a black branch with blood that kept drippin’
I saw a room full of men with their hammers a-bleedin’
I saw a white ladder all covered with water
I saw ten thousand talkers whose tongues were all broken
I saw guns and sharp swords in the hands of young children
And it’s a hard, and it’s a hard, it’s a hard, it’s a hard
And it’s a hard rain’s a-gonna fall

And what did you hear, my blue-eyed son?
And what did you hear, my darling young one?
I heard the sound of a thunder, it roared out a warnin’
Heard the roar of a wave that could drown the whole world
Heard one hundred drummers whose hands were a-blazin’
Heard ten thousand whisperin’ and nobody listenin’
Heard one person starve, I heard many people laughin’
Heard the song of a poet who died in the gutter
Heard the sound of a clown who cried in the alley
And it’s a hard, and it’s a hard, it’s a hard, it’s a hard
And it’s a hard rain’s a-gonna fall

Oh, who did you meet, my blue-eyed son?
Who did you meet, my darling young one?
I met a young child beside a dead pony
I met a white man who walked a black dog
I met a young woman whose body was burning
I met a young girl, she gave me a rainbow
I met one man who was wounded in love
I met another man who was wounded with hatred
And it’s a hard, it’s a hard, it’s a hard, it’s a hard
It’s a hard rain’s a-gonna fall

Oh, what’ll you do now, my blue-eyed son?
Oh, what’ll you do now, my darling young one?
I’m a-goin’ back out ’fore the rain starts a-fallin’
I’ll walk to the depths of the deepest black forest
Where the people are many and their hands are all empty
Where the pellets of poison are flooding their waters
Where the home in the valley meets the damp dirty prison
Where the executioner’s face is always well hidden
Where hunger is ugly, where souls are forgotten
Where black is the color, where none is the number
And I’ll tell it and think it and speak it and breathe it
And reflect it from the mountain so all souls can see it
Then I’ll stand on the ocean until I start sinkin’
But I’ll know my song well before I start singin’
And it’s a hard, it’s a hard, it’s a hard, it’s a hard
It’s a hard rain’s a-gonna fall

Was there and it was absolutley brilliant and stands to this day as one of the best shows I've ever seen. Being a promoter I've seen a few hundred. Really surprised Roger didn't add this as THE live show in his The Lot box set. the master tapes must be there. Hope its released officially soon.

It would be cool for Roger to post these full shows and some rarities on his channel! We want more shows at the time of The Cross and solo career !!

Roger is truly a surprise every time he performs vocally. I'm pleasantly surprised at how well he did A Kind of Magic, it's not an easy song to sing.
Unfortunately for Rog solo, he really needs Brian on guitar - especially on Show Must Go On - only Brian can play the licks in that song that sounds like Red weeping at Freddie's loss.

The music Old Friends is dedicated for Freddie.

I hope one day that Roger can do a live project. It is very good to see a great active artist like him who shows how complete he is! he sings, plays, produces and arranges, in addition to composing.

Or that he can compile his live performances at the time of The Cross and solo career.May the project encompass all your compositions on Queen, solo career and The Cross! He deserves more recognition in the phases after Queen.

EL OTRO LADO DE LA REALIDAD JR

Songs like touch the sky should have been made as a Queen song and performed live with Brian

TheOfficialCMAN

Wow his shows were great. I couldn't imagine how Fred would have done a solo concert but I know that would have been great too!
