Racing in the Street
Roger Taylor Lyrics

I got a 69 Chevy with a 396
fuellie heads and a Hurst on the floor
she's waiting tonight down in the parking lot
outside the seven eleven store
me and my partner Sonny built her straight out of scratch
and he rides with me from town to town
we only run for the money got no strings attached
we set 'em up and then we shut 'em down
tonight tonight the strips just right
I wanna blow 'em off in my first heat
summers here and the time is right
for racing in the street
we take all the action we can meet
and we cover all the north-east states
and when the strip shuts down we run 'em in the street
from the fire-roads to the inter-state
now some guys they go racin' in the street
tonight tonight the strips just right
I wanna blow 'em all outta their seats
we're calling out around the world
we're going racing in the street
I met her on the strip three years ago
in a Camaro with this dude from L.A.
I blew that Camaro off my back
and drove that little girl away
but now there's wrinkles round my baby's eyes
and she cries herself to sleep at night
when I come home the house is dark
she sighs 'baby did you make it alright'
she sits on the porch of her daddy's house
but all her pretty dreams are torn
she stares off alone into the night
with the eyes of one who hates for just bein' born
for all the shut-down strangers and hot-rod angels
rumblin' through this promised land
tonight my baby and me we're gonna ride to the sea
and wash these sins off our hands
tonight tonight the highways bright
out of our way mister you best keep
summers here and the time is right
for racing in the street
tonight tonight the strips just right
I wanna blow 'em all outta their seats

'cos summers here and the time is right
for racing in the street

Overall Meaning

The opening verse of "Racing in the Street" by Roger Taylor paints a vivid picture of a hot summer night in suburban America in the late 1960s. The singer describes his beloved 69 Chevy, with a powerful 396 engine and custom upgrades, waiting for him in the parking lot of a convenience store. He and his partner, Sonny, have built the car from scratch and race it for money across the northeastern states. The singer's passion for racing is palpable; he longs to blow his competitors "off in [his] first heat."

The second verse shifts the tone dramatically. The singer remembers meeting his current girlfriend on the racing strip three years ago, where he beat her in a race against her then-boyfriend. He has since settled down with her, but their relationship is strained. She worries about his safety every time he races and laments the toll it has taken on their relationship. The singer is torn between his love of racing and his desire to make things right with his girlfriend. The final verse finds the couple planning to escape their problems by driving to the sea, hoping to wash their sins away. The song's final line is a reminder that, for all the adrenaline and excitement of street racing, it ultimately carries a heavy moral weight.

I just discovered this magnificent gem a few days ago. Springsteen songs conjure up memories of summers at the Jersey shore. This song is timeless and it still inspires me to jump in the car and drive to the beach. I absolutely love this rendition. It takes Bruce's heartfelt ballad, rips it into overdrive and turns it up a few notches. It is perfect! I can envision this song played live at the Stone Pony on a hot summer night. Five stars from a Jersey girl who loves a good car song every now and then. Extremely well done, Roger!

Totally agree. Great vocal, great take. Actually prefer it to the Boss's and that's no mean feat. I wonder if he has heard it?
