Chain Of Life
Roger Waters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Cry, Baby, cry
Grow, Baby, grow
Stand on your own
Holidays and happy days at home
Seaside, bike ride, fun land, hot sand, childhood floating by
Wonder why I feel so shy when you are passing by
The years of love and wine
Pass by the magic eye
Good time, lifetime
Good line, lifeline
Pass by the magic eye

Your child is growing fast
His future is your past
Good time, lifetime
Good line, lifeline
His future is your past

Slow down, look around
Memories come drifting down
Good time, lifetime
Good line, lifeline
Memories come drifting down

And I remember rather well
Gather round my chair and I will tell
Carriages were open to the breeze

Muffin boys and trams and trees
I recall when I was younger, world was not so small

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Roger Waters's song Chain Of Life speak about the passage of time and how we are all linked in a chain of life. The song starts with the lines, "Cry, Baby, cry. Grow, Baby, grow. Stand on your own." These lines address the life cycle that we all go through, from crying babies to independent adults. The next lines, "Holidays and happy days at home. Seaside, bike ride, fun land, hot sand, childhood floating by. Wonder why I feel so shy when you are passing by," describe the happy memories of childhood spent at home, by the seaside, on bike rides, and at amusement parks. The nostalgia of the lyrics is highlighted in the line "Wonder why I feel so shy when you are passing by," suggesting that even though these memories are happy ones, they are tinged with a certain sense of nostalgia and perhaps even regret.

The following lines, "The years of love and wine. Pass by the magic eye. Good time, lifetime. Good line, lifeline. Pass by the magic eye," continue the theme of time passing by too quickly, suggesting the fleeting and ethereal nature of our time on earth. The next verse speaks about the passage of time as it relates to parenthood, with the lines "Your child is growing fast. His future is your past. Good time, lifetime. Good line, lifeline. His future is your past." These lines suggest that as we grow older and our children become adults, we become more and more aware of our own mortality and the fact that time is limited.

The final verse returns to the theme of nostalgia and memories, with the lines "Slow down, look around. Memories come drifting down. Good time, lifetime. Good line, lifeline. Memories come drifting down." These lines suggest that as we age, memories become more and more important to us, and that it is important to take the time to reflect on the past and the people and experiences that have shaped us. The final line of the song, "And I remember rather well. Gather round my chair and I will tell," suggests that the singer is eager to share their memories with others, highlighting the importance of connection and community in the chain of life.

Sounds a bit like the birth of a Pink Floyd tune. His vocals sound as good as any early material here. Thank you for posting.

this was always the go on of PF albums AHM and UmmaGumma, it would fit perfectly with those two along with soundscapes of More or Zabriskie Point that were to be......so Roger is the only one in "Floyd Corpus" to can say: "i did it!, it was me!" as he did SHOUTING ALOUD on his GREAT (his best) solo album "PROS & CONS OF HITCHHIKING".....WATERS proves that he IS the Floyd, but Syd was Pink in so many dark ways..... but without Rick Wright and Gilmour as a "always a new boy" there would be no magic....and without laughter and tears, there could be no PF....
