He became widely known for his version of "Wind Beneath My Wings" (1982), as well as his own compositions "Durham Town (The Leavin')" (1969) and "I Don't Believe in If Anymore" (1970), his 1970 hit "New World in the Morning" and his 1975 hit "The Last Farewell" (his only single to hit the US Billboard Hot 100, making it to the Top 20).
Whittakers first chart success came in 1969 when "Durham Town (The Leavin')" was his first UK Top 20 hit. In 1970 came two follow-up hits, "I Don't Believe In If Anymore" (Top 10) and "New World In The Morning" (Top 20), and 1971 brought two smaller hit singles "Why" and "Mamy Blue".
Whittaker was absent from the UK singles chart until 1975, when "The Last Farewell" went Top 3, after which it was another eleven years until "Skye Boat Song" returned him to the Top 10 of the singles chart.
Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Whittaker had success in Germany, with German language songs produced by Nick Munro (unable to speak German at that time, Whittaker sang the songs phonetically). In time he became more fluent in German and sang and was interviewed in German on Danish television in November 2008. Whittaker retired from touring in 2013.

Ein bisschen Paloma
Ein bisschen Hallo
Heute Nacht irgendwo
Ein bisschen Aroma
Ein bisschen Paloma
Ein bisschen Chichi
Da-da, da-da-da-da
Da-da-da-da-da-da
Da-da-da-da-da
Da-da-da, da-da
Ein bisschen Aroma
Ein bisschen Paloma
Ein bisschen Chichi
Brauch' ich heute Cherie
So wie noch nie
Den verrückten Song hier
Den mochte ich sofort
Doch von all dem Aroma
Paloma, verstand ich kein Wort
Mmm, da fragte ich meine Freunde
Die haben's mir erzählt
Und seitdem, weiß ich, hundertprozentig genau was mir fehlt
Ein bisschen Aroma
Ein bisschen Paloma
Ein bisschen Hallo
Heute Nacht irgendwo
Ein bisschen Aroma
Ein bisschen Paloma
Ein bisschen Chichi
Da-da, da-da-da-da
Da-da-da-da-da-da
Da-da-da-da-da
Da-da-da, da-da

Brauch' ich heute Cherie

(Da-da-da, da-da)

Ein bisschen Aroma
The lyrics to Roger Whittaker's song "Ein bisschen Aroma" are a poignant reflection on the end of an era. The singer laments the impending demise of the "river lady," an old ship that has been a symbol of strength and resilience on the river. The day the river freezes is the day that the ship will be taken away and scrapped, and the singer is filled with a sense of injustice at the thought that no one will care. The ship is more than just a vessel, it is a part of the community and has fought many battles. The singer feels that it is wrong to see her go.
The imagery in the song is powerful, painting a picture of the ship slipping away into the mist, its engines pounding in the distance as the old horn sounds goodbye. The water turning cold and freezing is a metaphor for the inevitability of change and the passing of time. The ship may be old and worn, but it still has value to the singer, who cannot bear to see it go.
