Hark! the Herald Angels Sing
Roger Whittaker Lyrics

Hark! the herald angels sing,
"Glory to the new-born King!
Peace on earth, and mercy mild,
God and sinners reconciled."
Joyful, all ye nations, rise,
Join the triumph of the skies;
With th' angelic host proclaim,
"Christ is born in Bethlehem."
Hark! the herald angels sing,
"Glory to the new-born King!

Christ, by highest heaven adored:
Christ, the everlasting Lord;
Late in time behold him come,
Offspring of the favored one.
Veiled in flesh, the Godhead see;
Hail, th'incarnate Deity:
Pleased, as man, with men to dwell,
Jesus, our Emmanuel!
Hark! the herald angels sing,
"Glory to the new-born King!

Hail! the heaven-born
Prince of peace!
Hail! the Son of Righteousness!
Light and life to all he brings,
Risen with healing in his wings
Mild he lays his glory by,
Born that man no more may die:
Born to raise the son of earth,
Born to give them second birth.

Hark! the herald angels sing,
"Glory to the new-born King !"

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing," written by Charles Wesley in 1739, tells the story of Jesus' birth and the peace that he brings to the world. In the first stanza, the angels herald the birth of the new king and bring a message of peace to the earth. All nations are called to celebrate this triumph of the skies while proclaiming that Christ is born in Bethlehem. The choir joins the angels singing "Glory to the new-born King!"

In the second stanza, Christ is described as the highest adored heaven and the everlasting Lord. The Son of God comes in human form as an offspring of the favored one, Virgin Mary. Christ, veiled in flesh, comes to earth as a person so that man can see the embodiment of God as a human. Jesus lived among us, as Emmanuel, so that he could experience human emotions and show his love for humanity. We hear again the angels singing "Glory to the new-born King!"

The final stanza is a salutation to Jesus, the heaven-born prince of peace and the Son of Righteousness. He brings light and life to the world and rises with healing in his wings. As humans, we are not perfect, but Jesus was born to free us from sin and death. He was born to raise the son of the earth and give us a second rebirth. The angels close this song singing, "Glory to the new-born King!"
