I've Lost My Mummy
Rolf Harris Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Just like the inside of any big shop,
people were everywhere,
Suddenly business was brought to a stop
when a terrible yell hit the air...

[chorus]
I've lost my mummy, a-ha-ha-haaaa,
I've lost my mummy.
[deep, indrawn sob]
I've lost my mummy, a-ha-ha-haaaa,
I've lost my mummy!
ub, ub hup ub hup hup ub hup hup ub.

People all gathered to look at the lad,
patted him on the head.
[Woman] Where was your mummy, when you saw her last?
Turning to her the boy said...

[repeat chorus]

Down came the manager to fix up the mess,
took the small boy aside,
[Manager] Come on now lad, let's have your name and address,
With a lungful of air he replied...

[repeat chorus]

Well just then his mother appeared on the spot,
gave him a hefty whack [sound of smack]
[Mother] That oughta teach you to go and get lost!
and the little boy's voice floated back...

I've FOUND my mummy, a-ha-ha-haaaa,
I've found my mummy.
[deep, indrawn sob]
I've found my mummy, a-ha-ha-haaaa,
I've found my mummy!
No mummy, I don't want to go, no mummy I don't want to, no mummy!

[applause]

Overall Meaning

The song "I've Lost My Mummy" by Rolf Harris tells a simple story of a young child who has lost his mother in a big shop. The chaos that ensues as people gather to help the child find his mother is emphasized by the lyrics "people were everywhere, suddenly business was brought to a stop when a terrible yell hit the air." The child's desperation is apparent as he repeatedly sings the chorus "I've lost my mummy," but eventually, she appears and whacks him for getting lost. The song ends with the child singing "I've found my mummy" but now, he is hesitant and resistant to going with her.

The lyrics represent the fear and distress that a child can experience when separated from their parents or loved ones in a public place, which could also resonate with adults. The song also highlights the importance of being aware of where one's children are in public places to prevent them from getting lost.

I haven’t heard this song for years. Used to make me cry when I was a kid with laughter, and it still does. I’m 52 this year, and it still makes me cry with laughter. XX

Rolf is and always will be a talented entertainer.

@Manguwu9895

100% shame he’s a pedo

@johnpalmer849

@@Manguwu9895 he certainly made some poor choices and was unfaithful to his wife, but I don't believe he was guilty of the charges he was accused of. He was acquitted of some and much of the other evidence was questionable. He certainly was not another Jimmy Saville. Today, just touching a girl can be interpreted as "assault", whereas in the 60s, 70s & 80's it was not seen that way.

@specialized29er86

Growing up in the 60's we loved Rolf his TV programs and all his songs and still do.

I've never heard this one, but I love it! I reckon if everyone thinks back far back enough, everyone would have had a 'I lost my Mummy;' moment. Rolf is a national treasure!
