If I Were a Rich Man
Rolf Harris Lyrics

"Dear God, you made many, many poor people.
I realize, of course, that it's no shame to be poor.
But it's no great honor either!
So, what would have been so terrible if I had a small fortune?"

If I were a rich man,
Ya ha deedle deedle, bubba bubba deedle deedle dum.
All day long I'd biddy biddy bum.
If I were a wealthy man.
I wouldn't have to work hard.
Ya ha deedle deedle, bubba bubba deedle deedle dum.
If I were a biddy biddy rich,
Yidle-diddle-didle-didle man.

I'd build a big tall house with rooms by the dozen,
Right in the middle of the town.
A fine tin roof with real wooden floors below.
There would be one long staircase just going up,
And one even longer coming down,
And one more leading nowhere, just for show.

I'd fill my yard with chicks and turkeys and geese and ducks
For the town to see and hear.
And each loud "cheep" and "swaqwk" and "honk" and "quack"
Would land like a trumpet on the ear,
As if to say "Here lives a wealthy man."

If I were a rich man,
Ya ha deedle deedle, bubba bubba deedle deedle dum.
All day long I'd biddy biddy bum.
If I were a wealthy man.
I wouldn't have to work hard.
Ya ha deedle deedle, bubba bubba deedle deedle dum.
If I were a biddy biddy rich,
Yidle-diddle-didle-didle man.

I see my wife, my Golde, looking like a rich man's wife
With a proper double-chin.
Supervising meals to her heart's delight.
I see her putting on airs and strutting like a peacock.
Oy, what a happy mood she's in.
Screaming at the servants, day and night.

The most important men in town would come to fawn on me!
They would ask me to advise them,
Like a Solomon the Wise.
"If you please, Reb Tevye..."
"Pardon me, Reb Tevye..."
Posing problems that would cross a rabbi's eyes!
And it won't make one bit of difference if i answer right or wrong.
When you're rich, they think you really know!

If I were rich, I'd have the time that I lack
To sit in the synagogue and pray.
And maybe have a seat by the Eastern wall.
And I'd discuss the holy books with the learned men, several hours every day.
That would be the sweetest thing of all.

If I were a rich man,
Ya ha deedle deedle, bubba bubba deedle deedle dum.
All day long I'd biddy biddy bum.
If I were a wealthy man.
I wouldn't have to work hard.
Ya ha deedle deedle, bubba bubba deedle deedle dum.

If I were a biddy biddy rich,
Yidle-diddle-didle-didle man.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Rolf Harris's song "If I Were a Rich Man" depicts a hypothetical scenario where the singer expresses his desire for wealth, status and prosperity. He starts by acknowledging that dear God made many poor people and that there is no shame in being poor, but he also believes that it is no great honor either. He wonders what would have been so terrible if he were a small fortune.

The singer goes on to daydream about all the things he would do if he were rich. He would build a big tall house with many rooms by the dozen right in the middle of the town, with a fine tin roof and real wooden floors below. The house would have one long staircase going up and one even longer coming down, and one more leading nowhere just for show. He would also have a yard filled with chicks, turkeys, geese, and ducks that would make loud noises, announcing to the town that a wealthy man lives there.

In the second verse, the singer imagines his wife, Golde, looking like a rich man's wife with a proper double-chin, supervising meals to her heart's delight, putting on airs, and screaming at the servants day and night. He also imagines being consulted by the most important men in town, posing problems that would cross a rabbi's eyes. Finally, he envisions having the time to sit in the synagogue and pray, discussing the holy books with learned men for several hours every day.

Overall, "If I Were a Rich Man" speaks to the universal desire for wealth and prosperity, and how it can change a person's life and social status.

Papillon by Rolf Harris

I so well remember my first love,
Summer days and fields of gold,
Me and Papillon were only 5 summers old.
We went chasing after butterflies,
In a game we couldn’t win,
Til’ the darkness of the Autumn nights would begin,
Would begin.

Papillon, Papillon,
Soon the winter will be gone,
Papillon, Papillon,
Wait til’ summer comes along.

As we grew together hand in hand,
Never dreaming of goodbye,
Was I wrong to build my childish hopes up so high?,
I’ve recounted every single one,
But the solitary day,
When she said to me that we must go separate ways,
Separate ways.

Papillon, Papillon,
Soon the winter will be gone,
Papillon, Papillon,
Wait til’ summer comes along.
Papillon, Papillon,
All the memories will remain,
Papillon, Papillon,
Til I find you once again.

I’ve been married almost 3 years now,
And a little girl is born,
Was it foolishness to christen her Papillon?,
Come the summer we’ll chase butterflies,
Til’ September sees them gone,
I’ll relive again those happy days,
With my own Papillon.

Papillon, Papillon,
Soon the winter will be gone,
Papillon, Papillon,
Wait til’ summer comes along.
Papillon, Papillon,
I’ll be thinking even then,
Papillon, Papillon,
I must lose you once again.

Papillon, Papillon,
La la la...... (x4)

Fade out.
