No, the Japanese didn't play the squid game before the Korean.
The first game they play here in this movie is called "Daruma-san ga koronda" (達磨さんが転んだ).
The first game they played in Squid Game is "Mugunghwa kkochi pieotseumnida" (무궁화꽃이 피었습니다).
They're both variations of Red Light, Green Light game. But they are not the squid game.
The titular squid game refers only to the last game that the contestants played in the Squid Game movie, that uses a field drawn with lines in the shape of a squid, which is not played in this movie.

Addition To The First Reply,,
ACTUALLY, The Game For Those Who Skipped School..... Will Be Way More Brutal
.
Let Me Put It This Way :
"They See The Playground In This Movie, As "Trial/Test" ..... Meanwhile They See The Playground For Those Who Skipping Class, As "Trash Can""
("They" = "God In This Movies")
@daddyfett9857

@sheiladelarosa_
@Katy Pinter the death game trope is one of the most popular in cinema and literature. No one copied no one.
@avalonneale4544
@Katy PinterSquid game didn't copy anyone, because for one the squid game writer had the script from years ago.
@lislac
@Katy Pinter Not really, the games in squid game are kids games in korea. So, its most probably have been played by children there long before. Plus, just because it's similar doesn't mean one copied the other smh.
@shubhangisrivastava9160
Kids who didn't attended their school that day are real children of God.
@minha3445
