And Merry Clayton's voice cracking accidently simply has to be the most phenomenally best accident in rock history. Listen to Mick go "Whoa" in the background. The last time I ever saw my dad before he passed away he told me that this was his favorite song and that he had always taken every chance to see the Stones in concert. Everytime I listen to it now I remember my dad and think about how he spent his young rebellious days listening to this long before I was born. We'll quite simply never see an artist like The Rolling Stones again in our lifetime. Covered their discography across Rock n Roll, Blues, Country, Soul, Funk, Psychedelic Rock etc.
Many artists have come and gone since then but sixty years on The Stones still sell out stadiums across the world today.
And 'Gimme Shelter' epitomises the height of their brilliant legacy. A haunting intro, Jaggers most raw vocals, Merry Claytons ghostly like backing vocals, Charlie Watts and Bill Wymans excellent timing and Brian and Keefs' gritty riffs.
Truly a once in a lifetime act. In 50 years, the modern pop artists of today will fade into obscurity, whereas The Stones, Beatles, Who, Zeppelin, Floyd etc will live on. Timeless.

Military brat here whose father was in and out of TDY for months at a time. This was me at six years old. Period. The Rolling Stones have always struck me with their frank lyrics and musicianship, and it just doesn’t get any rawer than “Gimme Shelter”. Hey, my wife Maryann met Mick Jagger when she was working in a restaurant that she managed in Laos. He walked in with two of his children, and she served them. I wrote this song as a tribute to her experience. I thought that it would have been cool if he had the idea instead of myself. Anyway, this is just a micro blot of Jaggers' continuous influence wherever he happens to go. BTW, his credit card listed his name as Michael Jagger... Honestly, this was never one of my favorite Stones songs. I can close my eyes and practically visualize every Martin Scorsese movie ever. But when it comes on, I listen all the way through, just for 3:00 , when Mrs. Clayton cracks her voice, she practically blows an overtone, there is so much soul, power, and emotion in that one lyric in that one second, it makes the song timeless.

I think this is the greatest rock track ever. Jagger's voice is muffled, and not all the lyrics are genius but the music could not be better. Like an army riding relentlessly, hell for leather, into the abyss.

As I sit here listening to this masterpiece and remembering watching The Departed (for like the 10th time at least) I can't get over how perfect this song was for that scene. When Jack Nicholson delivers that "when you're facing a loaded gun, what's the difference?" gives me chills. It's 5am where I live but that scene and this song have inspired me to go hit the gym. I know that no one is probably going to see this but I thought that I’d share this anyways. Honestly, this song is incredibly special to me and this is the reason why. Back in October of 2021 back when I was in my first year of high school I liked this girl and around that time on Fridays and maybe Saturdays I would sit by a window at my house at night and drink Apple cider . It may not have seemed like much but those times that I did that were special moments for me. One night I was texting her while I was doing that I was listening to this song on repeat. Eventually she texted me and we got into a conversation. I asked her what she was doing and she told me that she was styling her hair. I ask her if after she’s done if I could see. She sent me a photo later and for the first time while I was listening to this song I told her that I thought she looked pretty. She said thank you and that I looked handsome and it made me happy. Genuinely happy. Later that month we both confessed to each other our feelings that we had for one another. I know the song is dark in its subject material and it barely fits the thing I was just talking about but every time I hear it now I think of that night. And how if I didn’t say that I thought she was pretty then I probably wouldn’t have been brave enough to tell her my feelings. Been going good for almost a year now with her. Thank you to the Stones for making such an amazing song for anyone to enjoy.

I heard this song for a cross over event for Law and Order, SVU and Organized Crime for the 22nd of this month. I forgot how powerful this song was. Still love the Rolling Stones and I was a child of the 60's living in Boston during all of this. Wow. Just watched the original youtube version. Blew me away!!!!!!
