What Do You Do
Rollins Band Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
When you see yourself and see the one that you hate
When the night lasts forever and time stands still
When you see yourself and want to kill
When the world doesn't fit the head on your shoulders
When you punch the walls and feel the world's fist
The big ideas you have leave you feeling so small
What do you do when you want to get over
What do you do when you want to get through
What do you do when you just can't take it
What do you do when you just can't fake it anymore
Feel the pressure
Feel it squeeze
The eyes in your head
The heart in your chest
Where's the answer
Where's the release
What do you do
When the lies that they told and the price that you paid
Force you to see the mistake that you made
When they shake your hand and stab your back
When frustration paints your four walls black
When they pick you up and let you fall
When you find their something is nothing at all
When ends miss ends and the endlessness sends you
Down to the bottom of the drain in pain
When you're pushed to the edge and can't maintain
The lyrics of Rollins Band's song "What Do You Do" express the feeling of being stuck in a situation where there seems to be no way out. The song talks about the different emotions that one goes through during such a phase. The opening lines of the song "When no one will listen and time won't wait, When you see yourself and see the one that you hate" highlight the sense of hopelessness that one feels when they are not understood and when they don't like who they are becoming. The song explores the sense of frustration and anger that one feels when they see themselves failing to cope with the world around them. It talks about the physical manifestation of this internal turmoil, "When you punch the walls and feel the world's fist."
The song also highlights the emotions of confusion and helplessness that one feels during such times. The lines "The big ideas you have leave you feeling so small, I can see it in your eyes you can't deal with it all" speaks about the difficulty one faces in processing their thoughts and making sense of them. The chorus of the song, "What do you do when you want to get over, What do you do when you want to get through, What do you do when you just can't take it, What do you do when you just can't fake it anymore" poses a question about what one should do when they feel like they have no control over their situation.
The song continues to explore the feeling of being trapped and the desperation that one feels when there seems to be no escape. The lines "Where's the answer, Where's the release, What do you do, When the lies that they told and the price that you paid, Force you to see the mistake that you made" highlight the sense of responsibility that one feels for the situation that they are in. The song comes to a close with the lines "When you're pushed to the edge and can't maintain," which expresses the feeling of being overwhelmed and unable to cope with the pressure.

Same here, I'm 27 and still figuring shit out. But this album has been such a supporting block for my formal years. Now revisiting it 7 years later it's still a masterpiece.

@Iam Canadian did the same for me, 20yrs ago I was doing time and listened to those two albums obsessively. Can't say I have the same respect for him now though. Seems to have stagnated and regurgitates the same lines from 30yrs ago when the world has changed.

One of a kind this man. When I was a young I needed someone to look up to and I did think Henry was so smart and honest. I was so angry and lost then not now. I am 53 and so very grateful to still to this day think of line or 2 from the Rollins band. I believe that I am a work in progress and have been influenced in a very positive way by Henry Rollins. Thanks for reminding me of that. I think it changed me as well. Weight even more.
