1) ROME is a Luxembourgish neofolk act founded in late 2005 as the main output for the songs of Jerome Reuter and was joined by co-producer Patrick Damiani as official member in early 2008. ROME signed to the Swedish label CMI in 2006 to release an EP titled "Berlin" (June 2006) and the albums "Nera" (November 2006), "Confessions d'un voleur d'ames" (April 2007), "Masse Mensch Material" (March 2008). In 2009 ROME got signed to the german label Trisol and released the EP "To Die Among Strangers" (May 2009) and the album "Flowers From Exile" (June 2009).
In their earlier work ROME mixes influences of Industrial and Neofolk with Experimental and Electronic Pop. The traditions of (French) Chanson and (American) Folk are becoming more and more influential in their current work. In 2009 violin player Nikos Mavridis officially joined the band to further contribute to the creation of their unique sound, which they themselves refer to as Chanson Noir. Nikos left the band in late 2010 to answer the army's call and Patrick found himself more and more tied up in the work for his own professional recording studio in Germany. ROME released the EP "L'assassin" in early 2010, shortly before going into hiatus, followed by the full length "Nos chants perdus". In 2011, Jerome, the project's only real flag-bearer, recorded and released the trilogy "Die Aesthetik Der Herrschaftsfreiheit" (Trisol) and has taken up touring again with his new band mates Patrick Kleinbauer, Eric Emmel and Tom Luciani. ROME's lyrics often deal with anarchism and are demanding freedom and equal rights for all people on earth.

This Twisted Crown
Rome Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
this twisted crown
so close and yet so far
a black craving's call
from distant worlds
from a time remote
absent or mystery
we hold the keys to uncertainty
sometimes art can be nothing but violence
sometimes art can be nothing but cruelty
certains s'en inquiètent, c'est vrai.
certains s'en inquiètent.
ever distant
ever silent
these chains of glass
order and instinct
this too shall pass
certains s'en inquiètent, c'est vrai.
certains s'en inquiètent.
so kiss me cold when they chain me down
to have and to hold this twisted crown
so kiss me cold when they pull me down
to have and to hold this twisted crown
so kiss me cold when they drag me down
to have and to hold this twisted crown
The lyrics of Rome's song "This Twisted Crown" evoke a sense of tension and unease. The first stanza juxtaposes the closeness and distance of a desire with the idea that everything passes. The line "a black craving's call from distant worlds from a time remote" could be interpreted as a temptation from another world or time, something that is alluring but also unknown and potentially dangerous. The second stanza asserts that we hold the keys to uncertainty, suggesting that we may have more control over our fates than we realize, but also acknowledging that uncertainty is an intrinsic part of life.
The lyrics take a darker turn in the third stanza with the lines "sometimes art can be nothing but violence, sometimes art can be nothing but cruelty." This could be a commentary on the power of art to reflect and perpetuate violence and suffering, or it could be read as a metaphor for the struggles and conflicts of life. The repeated phrase "certains s'en inquiètent, c'est vrai" (meaning "some are worried, it's true") adds to the sense of anxiety and uncertainty. The final stanza with the refrain "so kiss me cold when they chain me down to have and to hold this twisted crown" suggests a willingness to endure suffering and claim a twisted form of power despite the potential consequences.
Overall, the lyrics of "This Twisted Crown" paint a picture of a world where desire, uncertainty, and violence intersect, and where power can be both alluring and dangerous.
