Greatly admi… Read Full Bio ↴Romica Puceanu (1926-1996) was a Romanian gypsy singer.
Greatly admired by those who knew her singing, she was the unfortunate victim of a number of circumstances which prevented her receiving the acclaim which she deserved. By the 1960s and 1970s she had become in Romania the unrivaled interpreter of the cintec de pahar, that form of urban Romanian Gypsy song, a combination of Turkish and Romanian elements in a unique Gypsy setting. She possessed an exquisite voice and was singer of great sensitivity and depth. Romanian state policy in effect during most of the years during which Puceanu was in her prime, made it difficult for most artists, particularly Gypsies, to be heard abroad.
In November 1996 Puceanu died in Bucharest as the result of a car accident.

Cand eram indragostiti,
Zarzarii s-au scuturat
Si-amindoi nu ne-am luat.
Na la neica mere dulci,
Undo-i sta sa le maninci,Sa-ti aduci neicuta -aminte
De-ale noastre dulci cuvinte.
Ma sarutai printre flori
Si-mi jurai c-ai sa te insori
Can s-or coace prunele
Si-om culege viile.
Prunele s-au scuturat
Si tu neica m-ai uitat.
The song "Erau Zarzarii Nfloriti" by Romica Puceanu is a melancholy tune that speaks of lost love and abandoned promises. The opening lines of the song describe a romantic setting where the couple was in love and surrounded by blooming jasmine plants. However, as time passed, the jasmine flowers withered away, and the couple did not keep their promise of staying together forever.
The next few lines depict the traditional Romanian scene of eating apples with a common expression “Na la neica mere dulci, Undo-i sta sa le maninci”. The singer asks her former lover to recall their sweet memories while eating the apples, which remind them of their sweet words and feelings of love. The following lines reminisce about how the couple used to kiss amongst the blooming flowers, and he swore that he would marry her when the grapes ripen.
However, as the grapes ripen, the lover forgets his promises, and the singer concludes the song by saying that the plums have fallen, and her lover has forgotten her. The song is a poignant reflection of how time and circumstances can change people's lives and destroy love, even once nurtured with care and affection.

Erau zarzarii-infloriti
The blackberry bushes were blooming
Cand eram indragostiti,
When we were in love,
Zarzarii s-au scuturat
The blackberry bushes shook
Si-amindoi nu ne-am luat.
And we didn't pick any.
Na la neica mere dulci,
There, at our uncle's house, were sweet apples
Undo-i sta sa le maninci,
Waiting for you to eat them
Sa-ti aduci neicuta -aminte
To remind you, my dear,
De-ale noastre dulci cuvinte.
Of our sweet words.
Ma sarutai printre flori
We kissed amongst the flowers
Si-mi jurai c-ai sa te insori
And you promised to marry me
Can s-or coace prunele
When the plums ripen
Si-om culege viile.
And we'll harvest the grapes.
Prunele s-au scuturat
The plums fell down
Si tu neica m-ai uitat.
And you, my dear, forgot about me.

When the apricot trees were blooming
We were in love but at the time the bloom was gone our love fell apart.
Here,my love,taste some sweet fruits
And try to have the time to eat them
So,later you could remember our sweet words of love.
You kissed me through the bloom and you sworn me you will marry me,
when the plums would ripe and when the time comes to harvest the grapes.
Now,the plums had fallen on the ground and you my love forgotten me.
This is a love story song that went south unfortunately.
Great voice amazing music.
