Greatly admi… Read Full Bio ↴Romica Puceanu (1926-1996) was a Romanian gypsy singer.
Greatly admired by those who knew her singing, she was the unfortunate victim of a number of circumstances which prevented her receiving the acclaim which she deserved. By the 1960s and 1970s she had become in Romania the unrivaled interpreter of the cintec de pahar, that form of urban Romanian Gypsy song, a combination of Turkish and Romanian elements in a unique Gypsy setting. She possessed an exquisite voice and was singer of great sensitivity and depth. Romanian state policy in effect during most of the years during which Puceanu was in her prime, made it difficult for most artists, particularly Gypsies, to be heard abroad.
In November 1996 Puceanu died in Bucharest as the result of a car accident.

Hai neicuta amandoi
Sa ne-nveselim si noi mai
Ca la masa ne serveste
O ancuta ca-n poveste
De-i mai ceri un kilogram
Ea iti raspunde nu mai am
De-i mai ceri un kilogram
Ea iti raspunde nu mai am
Vezi drumetule de drum
Caci ce e mult nu e bun
Nu-ti mai pierde cumpatul
Caci vreau sa-ti vad zambetul
Romica Puceanu's song "La cîrciuma de la drum" captures the essence of a rustic tavern experience, one that invokes a sense of nostalgia and community while weaving together themes of camaraderie and the allure of simple pleasures. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of a roadside tavern adorned with the natural beauty of "florici de alun" (hazelnut flowers), creating an inviting atmosphere where people can gather and unwind. The mention of "carciuma" (tavern) and the two linden trees suggests a familiar and welcoming place, integral to the local culture. The line "Te opreste vrei-nu-vrei" implies a sense of inevitability, as if the charm of the tavern calls out to passersby, drawing them in whether they intend to stop or not.
As the narrative unfolds, we are introduced to the tavern's enticing figure, the "carciumareasa" (tavern keeper), who is characterized as beautiful and wise. Her dual nature—being both attractive and shrewd—suggests that she possesses an understanding of the dynamics at play within the tavern, perhaps knowing how to balance hospitality with business. The refrain about her not letting patrons linger too long at the table hints at a playful yet competitive atmosphere; while she charms her guests, she also subtly enforces boundaries that prevent excessive indulgence. This dynamic evokes the traditional role of a tavern as not just a place for drinking but an integral community hub where social interactions are carefully regulated.
Additionally, the lyrics delve into the time-honored tradition of drinking as a shared communal activity. The invocation of "batranii" (the elders) emphasizes respect for tradition and the knowledge passed down through generations about enjoying life, encapsulated in the phrase "sa bei cum batranii spun" (to drink as the elders say). This nod to generational wisdom creates a sense of continuity and connection among those who gather, inviting listeners to reflect on their own experiences with community and the joy that comes from sharing a drink with friends. The imagery of drinking wine, particularly a "paharel de vin bun" (a small glass of good wine), exemplifies the celebratory aspects of life that the song honors.
Throughout the lyrics, there's an underlying cautionary element conveyed by the lines addressing the concept of moderation. The urgent plea to the traveler, "Vezi drumetule de drum, Caci ce e mult nu e bun" (Watch out, traveler, because too much is not good), serves as a reminder of the importance of balance in enjoyment. It echoes the larger life lesson about restraint and mindfulness, emphasizing that while the tavern offers a luxurious reprieve from life's burdens, one must remain aware of the dangers of excess. This blend of revelry and moderation encapsulates the experience of life—embracing joy while remaining grounded in the realities of responsibility, ultimately inviting listeners to smile and partake in the simple yet enriching moments life has to offer.
