Ron Goodwin Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
on your wedding day
and I'll hear you promise to love and obey
Though you may forget me you're still on my mind
Look over your shoulder I'm walking behind
Maybe I'll kiss again with a love that is new
That I shall wish again I was kissing you
We could have been happy like Dabby and Joe
So if things go
Unkind look over your shoulder I'm walking behind
The Theme from Limelight is a song that is melancholic in tone, and in a sense, functions as a farewell that is intertwined by regret and wistfulness. The song is composed by Ron Goodwin, and the lyrics above are sung in the latter half of the composition. The singer of the song conveys his desire to be part of the wedding ceremony of the person he loves, and in doing so acknowledges that the individual may not reciprocate his sentiment. The singer's love for the individual is so profound that he is willing to let go of his own feelings for the other person's happiness. Still, he hints at the pain of separation that the act of letting go would entail, and at the same time, he acknowledges that he would continue to care and look after the individual.
The singer's declaration of his love is weighted by the sense of regret at missed opportunities, both for romance and for friendship. It is clear that the relationship between the two individuals has not progressed to a point where they would be together at the wedding. The singer holds on to the possibility that the other person may look back and acknowledge him despite their differences. Ultimately, the song is about the bittersweet feelings that arise when one harbors strong emotions for someone who does not feel the same way, and the bravery that comes with acknowledging this fact.
