He is mostly remembered for his film and television music, particularly the Doctor Who theme, which was realised by Delia Derbyshire and the BBC Radiophonic Workshop using electronic oscillators and magnetic audio tape editing (including tape loops and reverse tape effects).

Ron Grainer also composed the music for TV series The Prisoner, Maigret, Steptoe and Son, and Tales of the Unexpected. He is also credited with many film scores, such as The Omega Man, Only When I Larf, and To Sir, with Love

He died of cancer in Surrey, England aged 59.

As I well remember this theme of the early 1960s Like the Third Man it is unique.

Very special memories for me when I was at school and we were preparing for open day.The theme was jazzed up so that it could have modern dance moves made. I remember putting things on the wall and being high up, I could see them rehearsing this dance routine outside on the grass one floor down. All done by a very talented teacher. More like the Joe Loss version.

I bought it with my Christmas record token at the end of 1960! I can't remember what label it was on, but it was a sort of maroon colour with maybe blue and yellow diamonds round the edge of the middle disc. Ah, I've found it -- it was Warner Brothers WB.

Nope! The official title was "The Maigret Theme" - and it was subtitled "Theme from the BBC series, 'Inspector Maigret'" - and as far as I know, it's TOTALLY unlike anything else Ron Grainer ever did. Then again, the crafty Aussie was nothing if not diverse - Doctor Who, The Prisoner, Tales Of The Unexpected...

Me too Sue. I grew up in an age where we didn't have TV in country Vic so I had to resort to the occasional visit to relatives in the city where I began my obsession with Maigret ... at a very young age I might add! Whilst the theatricality of recent Maigret series have left the original for dead, Michael Gambon, great actor as he is, didn't have quite the appeal that Rupert Davies did but I thought Rowan Atkinson was superb. BUT ... all the subsequent series miss completely the setting that Ron Grainer's original theme conjured up. For me, you can't do "Maigret" without the accordion or harmonica!

Good to hear a nod for Rowan Atkinson's version which also included his intelligent wife. I wish he'd made more. For me, Bruno Cremer's version in French is the definitive "Maigret."

This brings back memories of the original Maigret series in the 60's when I used to watch it with my dear Mum. I'm sure Rowan Atkinson will be a hit in the role.
