Atlanta
Ron Pope Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Past the lighthouse and the shore
Beyond the breakers they do go
Where they'll end up I don't know
And when this weather finally breaks
I wanna feel the sun upon my face
Although many things will change
That is one which stays the same
And all the tears I've cried
If I can make it there, I'll see you on the other side
All I never learned
'Cause on the thousand miles from Atlanta
Beneath a thousand pounds of hurt
In this desert where I sleep
You wait for rain like it's make believe
Where I'm from, the earth she bleeds
Dark red clay beneath my feet
And if I'm forced to travel on
And end up further from my home
To live forever here alone
Well I don't think I'll last this long
And all the tears I've cried
If I can make it there, I'll see you on the other side
And all I never learned
'Cause on the thousand miles from Atlanta
Beneath a thousand pounds of hurt
Seems this road just does not end
And I am dead to all my friends
If I could compromise or bend
Perhaps I might be born again
And as I wait for shooting stars
On a night that's painful dark
I fall asleep in moving cars
When I wake up I won't care where we are
And all the tears I've cried
If I can make it there, I'll see you on the other side
And all I never learned
'Cause on the thousand miles from Atlanta
Beneath a thousand pounds of hurt
The song "Atlanta" by Ron Pope is a poignant and emotional reflection on the struggle of leaving behind a familiar place and embarking on a journey into the unknown. The lyrics justly capture the weariness of the singer as he watches the storm clouds roll past the shoreline and beyond the breakers, unsure of where they are headed.
The lines "And if I'm forced to travel on / And end up further from my home / To live forever here alone / Well I don't think I'll last this long" perfectly capture the longing for roots and connection that many feel when they leave their homes. The singer is clearly struggling with the journey and the changes it is bringing, and is struggling with the prospect of being lost and alone forever.
The final verse, with its reference to waiting for shooting stars, speaks to the need for hope and faith in the face of uncertainty. The journey may be long, but the singer knows that he must keep moving forward and embracing the unknown, even if it means leaving behind everything he knows and loves.

Ron Pope is the most amazing singer, both on record and live. His voice is so soothing and relaxing. I met him this year when he toured in the UK, he's also really nice and actually has conversations with the audience (although I get arenas would be a bit hard to do that) was the best birthday present ever. Jeez I love him!
